People it is so easy to google information. Cass-ole did have a white start and socks they just dyed it for the movie, as did they add hair extensions to his mane. They used doubles in the movie because his owners did not want him doing running and swimming scenes. Fae Jur did the beach scene, and 2 others did the running, swimming, and fighting scenes. In the sequel, they used El Mokhtar as a double, along with 2 other horses. El Mokhtar was originally picked to play Black in the first film but his syndicate of American Arabian breeders declined. El Mokhtar was humanely destroyed on the set prior to the end of filming of The Black Stallion Returns due to colic and other complications. The movie was released in 1979 and the sequel in 1983, Cass-Ole was euthanised in 1993. Great movies, loved them as a kid, and still love them today as an adult.

Yes you are so right Kika78!!..Cass-Ole did have a star and white markings on his legs that they had to black die them for the Movie!...His stunt doubles for the Movies consisted of Fae Jur, Diamond Night and Ala Charm...El Mokhtar was used in the 2nd Movie up to his tragic complications with colic which led to his early death..=(...I think they used the same stunt double horses too in the Black Stallion Returns, but not sure exactly!!.....I love these Movies and Cass-Ole really changed my life growing up loving Black Arabian horses, and wanting my own one day..=)..I will always love them!!..=) =)

1:42 actually is not Cass Ole but one of his stunt doubles named Star. He enacted the scene where the Black gets tangled in rope and caught between two rocks. He was so unconcerned about being tied up and forced to sit that Corky Randall had to toss pebbles at him to get him to simulate any kind of agitation.

I saw him at liberty in San Antonio at an Arabian horse show. back around 1983 or 84. Did it to the Chariots of Fire theme. It was so beautiful.

He was a beautiful horse, but didn't look purebred Arabian. He more had the body of a TB/Arabian cross. The neck and nostrils looked TB, not the distinctive Arabian look. His beautiful high tail was definitely an Arabian feature though! I loved these movies as a kid and can't wait to show them to my children.

Not sure how you can say he didn't look purebred Arab unless you are comparing to a particular bloodline. I knew this horse personally, and he had quite a purebred presence that was consistent with his bloodlines. Cass was a multiple National Champion Arabian show horse before he was chosen to play The Black, and he was stunning in the ring. When he was competing, it was hard to notice any other horse.

@LillyTheLeapord745 Cass Ole used extension for the long "krin" (neck hair sorry don't know hot it is said in english) and it was painted in some small parts like legs and forehead... or at least that's what I read... Still Cass Ole is one of the most beautiful horses I've ever seen...

I had the privilege of seeing and meeting CASS OLE at his last public appearance in the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma Wash. He did a at liberty show and afterwards he was brought over the rail and we had the opportunity to pet him and talk to the trainer..What a beautiful horse and he had the personality to go with his looks, so tipical of the Arabians. Their not only beautiful but they have a work ethic to die for. we had many Arabs and used them as lesson horses.Great horse RIP

Some of these scenes in the movie are not Cass Ole. His owners forbade his being in any running scenes or in the water. I believe he came to the fair close to where I live but I didn't get to see him. I loved both movies he was in.

Yes, there was another horse whom they originally wanted to play the role. His name is El Mokhtar. However they were able to aquire him to play the role in the return. Sadly enough he suffered a bout with colic while filming in Morroco and had to be euthanized. Cass ole returned for the rest of filming.

I so love this movie, especially when the boy and the horse are alone on the island. Magical moments that I know can exist between horse and human. Horses have been the biggest part of my life for 55 years, and there's nothing sweeter than sharing love and trust with this wonderfully huge, wonderfully loving animal. You might share your life with dogs, you might share your life with cats, but to truly share your life with a horse is a humbling experience. They're so instinctive, so intuitive, so real. To share their world is an honour.

When Cass Ole was brought to Arlington Park (near Chicago) on his PR trip for the movie, I rented an 8mm movie camera (no vid cams back then) and went to see him. I was able to get by the paddock fence and he actually came by me and I gave him a good scratch; he was drop dead gorgeous! Eventually, 11yrs. later, I got my own very handsome Arab gelding. Mine isn't black but is what they call a black bay (his sire was a black). His winter coat gets extra dark and looks almost black.
