After eight years, I finally returned to the Cass Scenic Railroad for two days in October 2018. Operating over the former rails of the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company, geared steam locomotives push passengers up the slopes of Cheat Mountain and Back Allegheny Mountain towards Bald Knob, the third highest point in the state and the highest standard gauge railroad point East of the Mississippi. The bulk of the locomotive fleet is comprised of Shay locomotives. Shays are driven by a set of vertical pistons that drive a gear shaft along the right-hand side of the engine, earning them the nickname "Sidewinders." The Cass fleet also includes a Heisler locomotive, currently operating on the Durbin Rocket, and a Climax locomotive that is nearing the end of a long restoration.
