Cassiopea sp. (upside-down jellyfish) in the shallow water of Palk Bay, India. A recent study suggests that these jellies can produce tons of sticky mucus that traps small prey. Human divers can experience a stinging water sensation in exposed skin (if swimming close), despite not being in contact directly.
The video was made using GoPro 7 (thanks to IdeaWild Grant for small equipment) in shallow water reefs of Palk Bay, Rameswaram, India. This video was done as a part of regular monitoring for the assessment of marine biodiversity, a study undertaken by Dr. Amit Kumar and Dr. S. Prakash and the team at Centre for Climate Change Studies, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai and Sathyabama Marine Research Station, Rameswaram.
