Great explanation! Why don't OEM's use flow formed wheels? If they're lighter and stronger and not much more expensive, I feel like it might be worth it for the handling and fuel economy improvements
@UhOhUmm
2 жыл бұрын
They are MUCH more expensive compared to what cast wheels cost. You're not taking into account the profit margins. In the aftermarket flow formed is only a little a bit more expensive, but that's mostly because you are comparing them to premium brands of cast wheels, cheap no-name cast wheels are insanely cheap and still meet spec. OEM's make millions of wheels, if a flow formed wheel is even 20% more expensive to make (it's way more, more like double or triple the price) the loses for them would be millions.

The materials are recycled from a forged wheel. They don’t just throw them away!

If you have a 17" cast aluminum wheel compared to a 17" forged alloy wheel, what might be the expected weight savings?
@Tom_pr

Same design and width.. About 2kg. I am getting 18inch forged. They will be 8+kg and have thinner spokes but my original 18's should be 12+kg so 4kg difference.

@@Tom_pr if it is the same dimensionally would it be safe to say that it would actually weigh more. I'm guessing where you get the advantage with a forged wheel would be able to remove more material and still maintaining strength required due to a higher density.

I'm having a set of forged magnesium wheels made to replace the forged aluminum ones on my car. My OEM forged aluminum wheels weigh about 23 lb, versus what they would have weighed had they been cast aluminum, about 28 lbs. The forged magnesium wheels will weigh about 14 lb for the same size wheel.

Very often you'll see sharper edge lines on forged wheels vs cast ones. Also, the surface of forged metal wheels looks smoother than cast formed.

ya but a forged wheel is still made from a blank. How is the blank made? You have to melt the metal to make it either way. So, I'm guessing that the forged wheel blank could have air trapped in it.

The company that's building my forged magnesium wheels uses a 20,000 ton hydraulic press to form the basic wheel shape before machining. This removes imperfections in the metal and aligns the grain boundaries in a manner that increases tensile strength.

I never understand why people claim forged wheels don’t crack . They are so strong that’s they don’t bend and they’ll crack . . Cast wheels sometimes are stronger depending on the manufacturing . The strongest wheels are billet . I had many forged wheels from hre , to works wheels and bbs . Japanese forged wheels are the strongest . European are the most over rated POs . The American wheels are better than the European . Most American 3 piece will have a spun barrel . Most jdm 3 piece are forged and the euro are flow form barrel but so call forge like BBS

So in fact, only the cast wheels have a fair name. What we call forged has nothing to do with forging but rather drilling. They take a block of metal and drill holes in it to make a rim. What we call flow-formed (forged) has more to do with forging than the forged wheels. Flow-formed wheels go through heating and forming, which is typical for forging. Such a mess in terminology.

Forged wheels are actually forged from a solid block of metal that is heated to a high enough temperature to make the metal soft and then compressed under the force of a high pressure hydraulic press to form the basic shape. The wheels are then CNC machined to the exact dimensions desired. I have a set of forged magnesium wheels being made for my car and this is the process being used, with a 20,000 ton hydraulic press doing the pressing. My wheels will weigh about half as much as they would have for a set of cast aluminum wheels of the same size.
