Louisville Water completes its first inspection of a cast-iron transmission main while it's filled with water and in service.
Working with Pure Technologies, crews inspected 4.5 miles of the 48-inch diameter main that runs along Eastern Parkway using an acoustic sensor. The advantage of the innovation is that Louisville Water was able to inspect the main without emptying millions of gallons of water and interrupting water service for thousands of customers.
Louisville Water engineers will use the data from the inspection to repair leaks and to determine if additional maintenance work is needed on the transmission water main.
This inspection is part of an ongoing commitment to maintaining the infrastructure that delivers millions of gallons of drinking water every day.
