The Santa Maria Co-cathedral was designed at the end of the 13th century (1288).
The new temple was consecrated on March 3, 1549. Elegant and sober with a predominance of the sense of unique space and functionality in the forms, its style responded to the architectural characteristics of the peculiar Gothic style that during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries spread throughout the domains of the crown of Aragon.
The communion chapel was added to the building by Juan Ybáñez between 1662 and 1670.
The 19th century also left its mark on the co-cathedral with a new painting of Gothic-Romanesque taste with polychromy and drawings typical of the artistic tendencies of the early 1900s.
The church was demolished by municipal agreement on November 17, 1936.
After four years of deconstruction and abandonment, a new project was commissioned to the architect Tomás Traver in 1940 and since then the reconstruction works have been interrupted and resumed several times during the last decades.
The bell tower represents for the co-cathedral its eternally handsome young man, El Fadrí (the bachelor), as it is located on the left side of the church façade. Its construction began in 1437 and was finished in 1604.
Throughout the video we can appreciate different typical locations of the city of Castellón, such as: the central market, town hall (1716), hemp market, church of San Agustín, Episcopal palace, Casa dels Caragols and the monument to the history of Castellón.
