Castiglione della Pescaia is a town of Etruscan origin located on a hill close to the sea. Its history is linked to the events of the Etruscans and the Romans, who left important evidence of urban works such as aqueducts, viaducts and paved streets.
The historic center of the town is dominated by an imposing medieval castle, built around a tower built by the Pisans in the 10th century. The castle is surrounded by walls that enclose the medieval village, made up of ancient houses and towers.
The walls that surround the town were built starting from the 10th century and are made up of the remains of two different city walls.
The first circle dates back to the 10th-13th century when the town was under the protection of Pisa, while the second circle was built in the 15th century to defend the village located on the hill.
In addition to the castle and the medieval village, the territory of Castiglione della Pescaia is characterized by the presence of the Diaccia Botrona nature reserve, recognized as an area of international importance for the rare ecosystem it possesses.
In 1404 Castiglione della Pescaia came under the protection of Florence and the Medici carried out numerous reclamation interventions in order to repopulate the area. However, the most decisive reclamation works were carried out only in the decade 1828-1838 under Leopold II, known as Canapone.
