Don't forget to tool harden the edge of the spear. (Hammering the edge with a ballpeen hammer) Bronze is a hard alloy, but tool hardening it will make it even more durable.

Just like @TheMagicWorker said, it reduces voids in the casting, but the way it does that is by letting air escape the mold. The air inside the casting that is being replaced by the molten bronze has to go somewhere, and the little passage ways allow air to escape.
