The remains of the tower castle stand on a hilltop in the municipality of Kradolf-Schönenberg in the canton of Thurgau. Originally it was known as Vesti or Schönenberg Castle. It was not given its present name until the late Middle Ages.
The castle was built in the first half of the 12th century by the lords of Schönenberg. They were ministerials of the Bishop of Constance and received Schönenberg from the diocese as a fiefdom. The family was first mentioned with Bertoldus and Rodolfo de castro Scoenenberc in 1159. Their descendant Friedrich II of Schönenberg was a crusader, as can be seen from a document of 1211.
In 1352, due to financial difficulties, Johannes III von Schönenberg had to return the castle and its lands to the bishop and eight years later formally renounced all his rights to this property. He gave the fiefdom to the lords of Heidelberg.
Insurgents destroyed Schönenberg Castle in 1407 during the Appenzell Wars. However, it was rebuilt soon afterwards. By 1460, however, the castle was already abandoned and the complex began to fall apart.
The ruins changed hands several times. The municipality of Neukirch finally donated the ruin to the cooperative for the preservation of the ruins of Last and Heuberg in 1974.
Between 1974 and 2004, the latter carried out numerous renovation works on the remains of the residential tower.
The tower has an area of 10 by 11 metres. Its walls are still 12 metres high and 1.9 metres thick. The top floor, which was made of wood, no longer exists. The former high entrance was located on the north wall.
The ruin is a popular excursion destination in the region, along with the nearby Heuberg castle ruins. Two hiking trails lead to the castle, where there is also a barbecue area.
