Thanks for the trip down memory lane! I loved the GBA and DS castlevanias, and was heartbroken when Order of Ecclesia was the last metroidvania in the series. I'm excited for when you get to OOE, it was really interesting and had probably my favorite gameplay setup of any of the games, even if the exploration elements weren't as strong. The first Castlevania game I ever played, and I love it to this day, I would love to see Konami going back to their roots and release more classic Castlevania games or Metroidvania ones. I would even love a Castlevania in the style of the 3D Castlevania Curse of Darkness mixed with the Soul-Gathering gameplay. But I guess that‘s just my opinion^^ Great video though, don‘t worry if you make more videos about Castlevania there‘s at least one guy now who‘ll always watch those despite them not being about Pokemon! ^^

Aria introduced the soul mechanic, which added a fair bit of variety to any given run of the game, but Aria also suffered from a very weak story, comparable to titles like Ecclesia, Portrait, and even Harmony of Dissonance. I mean, the final leg of the game is basically about 'defusing' the tension of an encounter with Dracula, by fighting a nameless faceless entity in what is effectively Zelda's Second Quest version of the Aria castle cut down to size. It feels like you're wrong-warping through everything you'd done up to that point, to fight an ass-pull monster. Like, the 'idea' of Aria is very cool, 'being' Dracula and having to escape that legacy--but I feel like the story could be re-done with more TLC--perhaps illustrating how Dracula gradually asserts control over Soma, Prince of Persia The Two Thrones style, and maybe instead of fighting Chaos at the end, Dracula can actually split off and manifest as Soma's evil-side that Soma has to face off against, the way Dawn of Sorrow pitted Julius and co. against him. Alas, given the current state of Konami I'd not hold my breath, but I suppose there's always Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to carry on the tactical soul system Aria introduced...

To be fair, there are actually a lot of JoJo references in Castlevania Like for example: Jonathan Belmont has the stone mask in symphony of the night, there is literally the soul dropped by the cagnazzo, that is the ORA ORA, it even screams that, same with harmony of dissonance with one of the moves, the Obviously not Dio battle, in which it even says "TOKI WO TOMARE" or something like dat, another boss may be Blackmore, a boss from Order of Ecclesia: he is named after a western musician (here, Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple), he makes dramatic poses and basically fights with a huge stand, and well... both are about a bloodline destroying a vamp, heck, they even came out at the same time

It also makes the touchscreen breakable iceblocks also breakable by normal weapons. It essentially makes it so you don't need to use the touchscreen at all. Much better for emulated play. I thought Soma was an American student studying abroad? I could be wrong though, I need to replay this game. Also as a side note, I never had an issue with the magic seals once I realized the starting spot on the circle flashes red. Once I noticed that, it got a whole lot easier. lol

Castlevania: DS is defintely my favorite Castlevania game, and one of my favorite games of all time. I played the *hell* out of this game a decade ago, and I'd do it again gladly. The seal system is *trash* but luckily it's only a very small part of the game. It's also one of the few games I loved enough that I actually 100%'d the whole thing. Even getting every single soul and weapon that I could get.

Bruh wtf. This man is making quality content about games people should go out and play and they get no views. But shitty unintuitive boring video about level 100 pokemon soft lock with graveler gets over a million.

In my opinion, this was definitely a good game, though not quite on par with some other Castlevanias. I'd say it's an upper-tier Castlevania though. Dawn Of Sorrow felt like it had a lot of "open space" in it; the story elements were not strung together very well and there was an overall lack of ambition in the storytelling, plus that obnoxious magic seal nonsense really killed the thrill of taking down the bosses. Breaking immersion is always a massive issue. Portrait Of Ruin fixed all of those issues with a more interesting story, tighter gameplay, and no gimmicky nonsense... and its final boss fight was totally epic, unlike the cakewalk that was Menace. Still, Dawn Of Sorrow is legions above some other Castlevania games, such as that hideous Lords Of Shadow.

Despire Aria being one of my favourites in the series, Dawn has to be my least favourite. It's the combination of a lot of little things. You already mentioned the lame villains, less interesting artwork and dumb touch screen gimmicks but its problems go way further for me. First of all, the areas, while nice to look at, are fairly dull. The Wizard's Lab especially should be way cooler than it is. Most of the music isn't very memorable either. The first two area themes are nice, but the rest of the themes are just kind of there. This game is an absolute nightmare for completionists. First of all, there's the soul level mechanic, which allows you to make souls stronger by collecting more of them. This means having to get 9 of most types of souls, which is pretty bad already. Add to that Yoko's shop, where you spend souls to upgrade weapons. Some souls are used way too often (freaking Valkyrie), and some of the enemies' drop rates are WAY too low (again, freaking Valkyrie). Not only that, but later upgrades require boss souls! This means you cannot get 100% completion without going through a New Game+ at least once. It's stupid and dumb and I hate it. Boss difficulty is also poorly balanced. You already mentioned Gergoth, who is the worst offender, but Death in this game also felt like one of his hardest incarnations to me. Abaddon can be cheesed, but he's a real pain if you don't have the right souls. Paranoia's annoying, too. Dmitrii, on the other hand, is a total joke, Dario's flame demon (Aguni?) is pretty easy, and the final boss doesn't put up too much of a fight either. So yeah, out of all the metroidvanias, this is the one I go back to the least. Though, if I do, I'll definitely have to take a look at the seal hack.

Unfortunately they changed the art style to appeal to "teens at the time". Sorry konami but the art style from symphony of the night to aria of sorrow is gorgeous and hold up to today. Order of ecclesia brought it back

you forgot to talk about the secret room at the beginning, when you can enter each shop. This floor is hard to get in and once you got in, youre in front of a LOT stronger ennemies. I can't really say HOW to get in because even i don't reaally know (i use the "discover map" cheat to see all the room in the game) I think you need to do something somewhere near the second zone of the game with a specific soul.

Just a heads up when using Persephone's soul (the vacuum cleaner). It can be used on Death as well as MANY other enemies to vacuum up their projectiles. Actually, it makes a lot of enemies and bosses cheaply easy lmao. If you're struggling on Death for example when he sweeps with his scythe in his second phase, this is THE way to go to get his tiny sickles out of the way and focus on his scythe. You can also get kind of tricky by timing a special axe attack for invincibility frames etc. That actually works really well in phase one when he breaks his scythe apart into tiny pieces.

I discovered your channel through your Pokemon videos. But I am also a huge Castlevania fan, and Aria of Sorrow is one of my favorite GBA games as well. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw that you did a video on that game. I didn't comment on that video, but you did a great review. The same with this review. I appreciate that you have more diversity in video game taste then simply Pokemon stuff. Would love to see you do more stuff about either Castlevania or other franchises that are not Pokemon!

I'm first Castlevania game was Aria of Sorrow and I loved your video on that one. this video was fantastic as well! I'm actually rewatching these videos again. hopefully these videos will eventually get the love they deserve.

Dmitrii Blinov You know, a fun fact about this guy's surname, "Blin" means a pancake in Russian. So his name essentially means "Dmitrii of pancakes". Not that this surname doesn't exist. It's actually pretty common in Russia. We even had one fatboy in our class with that surname (which was kinda funny). But it's probably like a peasant surname or smth. I just don't think it's a good pick for this kind of character who's a smug pretender for Dracula's throne.

I actually prefer Dawn of Sorrow over Aria of Sorrow, mostly because of the soul enchantment feature and and how souls can power up moves further when collecting the same soul repeatedly. Some abilities change drastically if you achieve several souls, such as the buer soul providing one flame around Soma, but when stacked with several buer souls, it then forms a protective barrier around Soma. I will admit that Aria of Sorrow has a superior art style and seems overall more mature than Dawn of Sorrow. But the mechanics for Dawn of Sorrow is superior and more fun.
