The big reveal of Varney being Death this whole time was such a great twist. When you look back at all of his scenes, it's hinted at so many times. The way people say he smells like something died, the way his collar looks like a scythe. Very well done! And I love Death's sassy attitude. He's been alive so long he just has zero fucks. 😂

He's also the only vampire with small beady black eyes. Every other one has red eyes, if I'm not mistaken. If Death existed from the beginning of life, he'd be around 3 billion years old or more. Yeah, at that point he probably doesn't give a fuck. Probably even has a list of the various things people like Belmont have said to him over the years. Like TFS Frieza.

I've never understood why people expect eloquence from grim reapers. Don't get me wrong, I can enjoy any depiction if done well. But insisting an entity that exists for the sole purpose of ending life (fraud or otherwise) expressing itself in some highly developed manner feels to me like they're missing the point. Complexity is an expression of life. Death is simplicity itself.

Ooh, I have waited to talk about Varney/Death for AGES, so here we go: 1. Death in the games is usually depicted as being Dracula's most loyal servant, being the penultimate boss of most of the games. The FINAL skill check before fighting Dracula himself. The thing is though is that their relationship in the games isn't really given much of an explanation, but the show actually provides one that fits into the lore quite nicely. Basically, the being we know as "Death" isn't the actual Grim Reaper, but an ancient elemental spirit that feeds on the loss of life and that simply took on the moniker. Protecting and serving Dracula mainly because he provides him an ample food supply. He's a parasyte, essentially, just like the Vampires he looks down on. 2. I love how many breadcrumbs there are to Varney's true identity: A) The first obvious clue is his design, his eyes, unlike every other character in the series, are just black dots that look unnatural and the collar od his jacket is quite literally shaped like a scythe. B) The fact that nobody knows who he is despite being a general in Dracula's army. At first I thought this was just going to be a running gag, but then he says that he was ravaging London "before it was London". And mind you , London was formed in roughly 43 AD as the Roman trading settlement Londinium before being renamed and restructured five centuries later after the fall of the Roman Empire Outright telling us that, by the time the series takes place, Varney is apparently over 1000 years old , making him older than even Dracula. Which is in reference to the fact that the character "Varney the Vampire" actually predates Dracula as a character And because of how he gets written off as a weasely idiot , everybody just brushes it off as a boast for his ego when in reality he was stating facts. C) Multiple characters comment on his stench and how he can be smelled from a mile away, almost like a decaying body. D) The way he acts is completely contradictory to his personality. Even though he comes off as a bumbling idiot with a bloated ego, he actually manages to get things done, conscribing both Germain and Hector for help in resurrecting Dracula, and maintains his composure against Ratko who basically tears into his ego for like a minute straight. Something you really wouldn't expect from a character like this. Fun Fact(s): 1. Note that Trevor knew how to dodge the scythe becaus ehe used one at the beginnig of the season as an impromptu weapon, so he knew its obvious shortcomings. 2. The weapon Trevor used to destroy "Death" is actually one of the *weakest* sub weapons in the games lol. But similar to how Carmilla's blade was in appearance a reference to it, its possible that the actual effect of the weapon is a reference to the Muramasa. A weapon that starts off weak, but can outscale every other weapon in the game with raw stats over time (hence Trevor slowly collecting pieces for it over the course of the season)

@@_Chaosnight_ Benefit of the doubt, at this point he's probably the closest thing to peak non-magical human currently around. He might be able to take a casual strike like that (remember Death is treating it as a game, he wants it to last to humiliate Belmont) if he has space to burn off the momentum. If that was a downwards blow that connected I think the result would resemble a bug that has been stood on but because he was able to shed a bit of the impact by tumbling backwards, it wasn't as hard of a hit as it might otherwise have been. I'd also like to imagine Belmont training absolutely teaches them how to take blows from large strong creatures correctly because dying in one's first fight to an ogre or vampire because they hit hard would probably be a disappointment to the entire line.

In the games Death was the literal Grim Reaper and he was a mere underling to Dracula who in turn was the herald of Chaos (the opposite and equal of the big G). Giving the unique setting of the show it makes sense for Death to be an elemental rather than a concept and this still remains one of my personal favourite interpretations of the scythe master, once you've lived long enough there's zero filter anymore unless you gain something from it (like how he manipulated Saint Germain both as the nameless alchemist and as the vampire lord Varny, the latter being a persona he kept up for a significant period of time). Also it just goes to show how epic Dracula truly is. Imagine being so powerful, intelligent and charismatic that even Death works underneath you.

The big twist has been revealed, and at last I can talk more about Death. As most of the people in the comments have already mentioned, Death is a major character in the Castlevania games, he's Dracula's right hand man, been in almost every game, and usually the boss before Dracula; a notable exception is Lament of Innocence, where he's actually the final boss (as is the case here). Death is also insanely difficult to defeat, with the exception of Simon's Quest, where you can skip the fight entirely; although you'll be missing out on a great item if you do (see one of my other comments for details).

CANON DIVERGENCE: Death was already present in the castle, being a servant of Dracula, when Isaac arrived to forge a new form or his master. St. Germain recognizes how thoroughly he's been played and uses the power of the Infinite Corridor to funnel Isaac's soul into the new body instead of Dracula, preventing Dracula from coming back. Death, as punishment, ties St. Germain's soul to the Infinite Corridor. He can move through it at will, back and forth across time and space, but is now unable to leave it in any meaningful way. As Death and Trevor fight, Isaac descends into madness and escapes

1:34-1:37 We see the cross sub weapon being used the way it was in game. The bandaged night creature, with spikes could be a reference to a boss named Zephyr. He's very quick, likes to throw knives at you, and can temporarily stop time; which would account for the teleporting. I suspected right away that the Alchemist was Death, the disguise was less than subtle; so I was completely caught off guard that Death was also disguised as Varney. But his manipulation was very similar to what he did in Curse of Darkness; see one of my other comments for details. Saint Germain suffered the same fate as Isaac, in Curse of Darkness: manipulated by Death, used as a tool to bring Dracula back, and then killed; although in the game Isaac was used as a sacrifice, while Germain's death was accidental. 11:32-11:35 Death always has a scythe, be it a large one or many tiny ones floating around. 14:12-14:38 The Cross sub weapon has now become the Golden Knife; yeah the blade is silver, but the hilt is gold. In Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, the strongest sub weapon in the game is the Golden Knife. The Golden Knife can make quick work of both Carmilla and Dracula's Ghost; and appropriately enough, Dracula's Ghost looks a lot like Death. Ironically, the Golden Knife is obtained by defeating Death; while here it was used to slay Death. As for the crystal, as I mentioned earlier in the season, crystals are sub weapons in some games and a means to progress further in the game in others; both in Simon's Quest. But in Lament of Innocence, there are orbs that can be combined with your sub weapons to increase their power and add an elemental attribute. This crystal is likely a reference to the white orb; which adds the light attribute to your weapons.

Now, at last, I can talk about Death's appearance in Curse of Darkness, and it's similarities to this season's plot. As I mentioned last season, there was a wandering priest, named Zead, who offered to help Hector on his quest for revenge; as he believed Isaac was protecting the source of Dracula's curse. However, Hector soon began to suspect something was off, when he spotted Zead and Saint Germain having an argument that quickly escalated into a fight. Zead finally showed his true colors, after Hector defeated Isaac and chose to spare him. Zead was actually Death in disguise, and had been manipulating the whole thing behind the scenes to bring Dracula back. The plan was to trick Hector into breaking Dracula's seal and then get him to fully succumb to Dracula's Curse by killing Isaac; doing so would make Hector the perfect vessel for Dracula to be reborn in. But because Hector would not fall victim to the curse, Death was forced to use Isaac (the weaker of the two forge masters) instead, and attacked Hector after beginning the ritual to revive Dracula. Hector defeated Death, but was too late to stop the ritual or save Isaac.
