Years ago I used to walk two Airedales and take them to the local 'dog-park' where a big pack of assorted local dogs-being-walked would be gleefully running around playing. Someone used to bring a couple of Border Collies, which would immediately set-to herding the other dogs into a tighter 'bunch' and directing them as they ran round the park. It was wonderful to watch, and the other dogs I'm sure had no idea they were being 'controlled' in this way.

Sounds about right. My full blooded Aussie herds dogs at the dog-park. They don't seem to understand that she is herding them at first. There was a pittie a few days ago that was disrupting her hard work, so she took him aside and ran him around enough that he got tired out and settled down. Roscoe's (the pit) owner thought it was hilarious, that she straightened that Big (80pound) boy out so easily.

I have a dog who’s half collie, and she even tries to herd up all the humans in the house. When she was only about a year old, if you strayed to far from everyone else, she’d bite your shoes til you came back. She was smart about it too, she seemed to know that biting shoes doesn’t hurt, because whenever we wore sandals, she’d leave our feet alone and just kinda shove us. One time she took off my boot, and my sock with it so I had to run barefoot in the snow to get it back.

Wow. Perfect technique! Can't deny centuries of selective breeding. My favourite breed of dog and doing such a good job too. Would make a shepherd proud. They absolutely need to have something to do, the dog would probably be out of its mind with boredom if it weren't for the cats. My friend had a mongrel that was part Border Collie and she used to herd tourists in the park. First time I dog sat her l didn't know she did it, she had rounded up about 10 of them before l realised what she was doing. I nearly died laughing when l noticed these slightly bewildered people looking at her and then each other, wondering why they were a group. Exactly the same technique too, just quietly keeping them moving in the right direction.
@vvelvettearss

oh my gosh that's brilliant !! 😂 I would have doubled over too. They had no idea she was herding them ?
@nikiTricoteuse
2 жыл бұрын
@@vvelvettearss Nope. They had no idea. That breed of dog (heading or eye dog) just walks quietly back and forth, not barking and not getting close enough to startle but, just close enough to feel too close so the animals (or people) move. If they want to move you in a certain direction they work back and forth on the opposite side until you move where they want. End result is a group of sheep (or people) exactly where you want them. Of course, a farmer would instruct their dog where they wanted the animals moved to, using whistles or shouted commands but, Jess wasn't getting any instructions so would just group them wherever she wanted. If you Google "sheepdog trials" you can see what the dogs do. The heading dog just stares them down (hence their other name, eye dog) and the huntaway runs back and forth barking but doesn't get too close and frighten them. Dog trials were on TV here in New Zealand weekly until 1992 and the important ones are still shown. It was my favourite thing to watch on TV when l was younger then, l got to work as a land girl on a sheep farm with a sheep dog called Bob. I had no clue but he was really smart so, we worked out pretty quickly that he would do his job and l would pretend to tell him how to do it.

@@vvelvettearss My Tess loved herding ducks and geese at a local park, even while on a retractable leash. I took it off, afraid she'd get it caught up somewhere and let others know she was no danger to them. When the geese were kept from coming out to pester the children on the playground nearby, she'd run them back to the lake and return to herd everyone else together! The camp dir. wasn't too happy, but only said she needed to be on her leash. That ended her fun a bit, but the people said they liked watching her herd everything, including them and their kids.

herding sounds alot more complicated than it actually is. herding breeds (like border collies) are bred to control the movement of other animals (ie. herding), so even if its a little thing, as long as theyre making another animal go somwhere else, theyre herding!

That explains why the dog is doing sort of a "sneaky" pose and slow movements despite being in plain sight to the cat he's herding. He is trying to herd because he does not have a good outlet for his energy. You need to take him for runs, obstacle courses and such, really use the breed for what it was intended. They are high energy, meaning they need a lot of physical exercise, without it they can start to herd other animals and even humans, some times they can bite humans in order to herd them because their instincts take.
