This movie transformed my life when I first saw it. :) I think it was all the perspectives he was recieving.... from the doctor, the priest, his mother, etc. and all he really needed was a positive-minded old lady who truely listened to him to make him feel alive again. Wouldn't be great if we were all like that?

its such a long time since i saw that movie and i still damn near cried watching that clip. as i remember it the juxtaposition of this sadness followed by the "life must go on" bit with harold and the banjo walking away to "If you wan to sing out" is one of the finest mood stransitions transitions in any movie ever and captures maude perfectly. unreal how powerful that movie and music still is. quality lasts eh.

I consider it to be one of the best movies ever made. It deals with difficult issues and does so with insightful humor and doesn't take itself too seriously. It is funny and heartbreaking but in the end leaves you with hope for the future. A fantastic film that is worthy of a spot in anyone's list of favorites.

I love the honesty of the car crash, no fancy Hollywood explosion, just death. Plain and ugly, like it is in the real world. Like it is for Harold. But the acceptance and recovery by Harold fills me with joy. The knowledge that life goes on, and the willingness to go out and live despite the hardships. Beautiful.

@punkcity I watched this for the first time and I have to say it was the woest and best ending to a movie I've seen. I started to fall in love with Maude along with Harold and found myself with the same feelings in the end with them wheeling her into the hospital and seeing him get the news that she was gone really got to me. It hurts so much more when this amazing music is playing behind it.

Your view may be different, and I respect that. Regardless, it was a beautiful, creative low budget movie, very underrated, and really fun to watch. This final scene, as a kid, really floored me, and the message at the end, of him plucking away at his banjo, really warmed my heart. The music, at the time, was ground breaking in terms of it driving the movie forward, it was so powerful at the time. I really loved this movie.

Wow, thank you, I hadn't seen the sculpture scene in that way, I could feel sensual/sexual awakening. Ahh the banjo, I loved how it was more value than the car and he heeded her advice to play an instrument. The loss of the car seemed symbolic of getting over his mother and the banjo a tribute to maude.

He had two, a Cadillac and a Jaguar...this is from IMDb trivia..The hearse Harold originally drives is a 1959 Cadillac Superior 3-way model that is one of the most sought after hearses among collectors today but at the time was considered nothing more than an undesirable used car which was purchased for a few hundred dollars. The Jaguar hearse was really destroyed at the end and no replica exists because they only constructed one version for filming.

Go to the Harold and Maude fan website and you can get the answers to just about any question you may have about the movie. As far as I can remember, according to the website, there is not "hidden" meaning to the paper. I think it just shows the conflict between the beauty of this world and how mankind has a way of ruining the natural beauty that is all around us. Happy Birthday Cat. Love Candy

This was such a well made movie, with such a liberal and anti American blatant message. When I saw it at 18 years old, I was so affected by it, and bought in to the messages it was selling. Anti religion, anti "war", anti police, anti American. Thankfully I grew out of that unrealistic idealism. The messages are well intentioned, but not effective in the real world. Thats not being pessimistic , it's just what I've come to believe, base on my experiences in the world.
