I am a AV engineer. SDI is very good but cable expensive compared with Cat6a. I have been using HDMI extenders for years, new ones coming out are very good and can take 60FPS the earlier ones only 30fps max. Some can not do 4k due the their cheap chipset. Please check if they can. We use Crestron (very expensive) Blustream, CVP, Kramer and other dedicated AV extenders. Not used amazon placed products before so have no idea how they perform. Aura which you can get from Mayflex and really good price for the TX and RX units but not yet reviewed these yet with 4k 60fps signal.

Small correction: there will always be a small delay using a long cable, approximately 1.5 nsecs/ft (5 nsecs/m.) at a minimum. there may be more depending on internal circuitry. This delay is small enough that you don't notice it. Also anyone trying to use these devices for "normal" consumer use will likely lose their "ARC" signal for return audio.

NDI is definitely the way forwards as it is ethernet based. Ironically, broadcasters are now going towards ethernet based solutions as the infrastructure is more common and re-usable/upgradable. SMPTE 2110 is what they use with fiber optic interfaces running at 10G/25G! However NDI is a poor-mans solution as it's slightly compressed and so uses lower bandwidth (and is bi-directional). I run a three camera system for my church broadcast, where one camera is HDMI and the other 2 are using NDI and it's great! I also use NDI for a confidence monitor and for song lyrics on a projector. It's much simpler than HDMI or SDI and I can switch the projector (via a web page) between program feed and song lyrics.

I found your video as I specced a Atem Mini Pro ISO with Go Pro's for a venue and used CAT6 Extenders by Cable Matters (for 1080P) When I plug it into the ATEM, the atem simply displays a blank blue screen. Plug the HDMI cable into a monitor or TV instead of the ATEM and it displays without issue. So the signal passes down the CAT6 cable and is converted back to HDMI but it refuses to work. @@AlexPettitt Yes you might get away with using wall data jacks and CAT patch bays in buildings but it's typically not reliable. For 200 more you can get the ATEM Television Studio HD...still run your HDMI cables to 4 inputs and then get SDI for a couple prosumer level camcorders...to me that bundle makes much more sense in the long run I use 50' HDMI cables with my Canon Vixia camcorders and so far they've worked flawlessly.

I think i need to correct you a bit. SDI converters are pretty cheap when you use the little boxes. Those are like 35 euro so those aren't the costs. Now for the SDI cable, yes you can buy the 6G or 12G SDI cable but i did some projects with low budget and even though i wanted the true SDI cable, they bought 100 meters black coaxial cable. I cut it up to 50m and it still worked like a charm. No delay and no problems with video dropout. Also you have the audiochannels. So a cheaper cable should work up to 50 meters with no problems.
@randomgeocacher
4 жыл бұрын
I’ve run 1080p/25 great on long cheap SDI cables, and short cables on tiny wires. 1080p data rates are very forgiving. That said, SDI coax isn’t a great cable in theory, it lacks common mode noise rejection since its a single data wire. A good Ethernet TP cable ought to be better at rejecting noise. So when you go towards 4K and 12G, maybe TP will outperform coax into longer distances.
@andydelle4509
4 жыл бұрын
@@randomgeocacher Yes, SDI is single ended electrically. But the noise immunity is so good you will have signal attenuation problems long before you ever see an external electrical noise problem. I have engineered several massive broadcast SDI installations since the 1990s. Never had an electrical noise issue. I suppose if you ran the cable through an electrical sub station you might have a problem but in most any practical setup you will be fine. The zits or snow you see with bad SDI or HDMI devices and cables is data errors on pixel by pixel basis. It is not electrical noise.
@randomgeocacher
4 жыл бұрын
Andy Delle I’ve seen Ethernet bricked by installation placing IT-cables along the power feed to a printing press (the ones big as small building) so clearly TP isn’t immune to extreme electrical interference, common mode rejection isn’t magical :) My incorrect thinking was that in order to overcome attenuation at higher length you would need more wires as with 100gbit/s cat7 (four wires per transmission instead of traditional two). That seems quite impressive compared SDI (currently 12gbit/s, 24 in the works). Then I learned cat7 can only carry 100gbit/s over puny distances, and 10gbit/s will be negotiated over long cable runs, effectively killing the argument that cat7 would be better (faster) than SDI in practice :) So no electrical cable I’m aware of is trying to run large data rates over high cable lengths, it seems they all die of attenuation problems at high speeds. HDMIs 48gbit/s (3x16gbit/s?) is actually fairly impressive but based on my experience of slower HDMI specifications struggling hard at short cable lengths I really wonder if HDMI 2.1 will work on any meaningful cable lengths. I imagine we all will move to fiber for more and more cable runs in the future if we keep increasing data rates without solving copper bandwidth properties.

I'm using a similar solution which also works well but the big annoyance with all of the extenders is having the power plugged in at the TX end! Great that you only need power at one end but for us it would be much more practical to have it at the Rx end where we have powerblocks to drive all our other gear. I typically don't have anywhere to plug in at the camera TX end so yet another battery required........ or extension cables running all over the shop so frustrating.

@@carmcrespo9062 Nope, I just avoid using input 1 with an extender. Picked up some 15' HDMI mini to HDMI. I was going to get a pair of SDI converters, but the virus hit and slowed down all my gigs. Hoping that will solve the 1 input problem.

I learnt the hdmi 1 input has an issue with YUV and RGB colors or so that’s why it happens to have issues.

Running the exact same setup using the HDMi extenders used in the video over a 35m cable and I get nothing through to the Atem mini pro. I'm using BMPCC 6k. It works fine when I run a laptop through the HDMi extender and into the Atem but not when I hook it up to the camera. Is there a setting I'm missing? Am I missing something?

Question, could the power be supplied on the receiving end, thus leaving the camera end without the need for another power supply? You mention that the transmitting end can supply the power and the receiving end does not need it, just trying to see if the reverse is possible.

Hi Alex, I’m using the same extenders. When connecting one of my cameras to channel 1, I’m getting a live green monochrome feed. However, I have no issues and get a clear live feed with the same camera, same cable when using channels 2, 3, 4. Have you tried using the channel 1 with a long cat6 cable? I’m only using a 10-15 ft cable. Any feedback would greatly greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hey Alex, I tried to this method it works well if I don't use the first entry... Somehow I got a green\weird screen. if I plug any other camera directly works good (no extender) and then use entry 2 or 3 or 4 for the HDMI extender... Any idea? I have the mini pro... Cheers from Panamá

Can you use them in the hdmi output with multiviw? That way you could put the atem close to the cameras but control them from a different room.

Yep this would absolutely work. You could also control the ATEM via Ethernet and the software control

Any thoughts on how to work with say, two HDMI video senders (Hollywood 300) and two HDMI cabled cameras in terms of matching video latency ? Is there a way to induce latency into the hard plugged cameras to match the natural delay off the wireless pair ?

Does this thing work in 4k too ?

Maybe synced clocks to show the latency of the long cable would have been a good thing to show. You showed the latency of a short cable but not with long cable - so when you showed the pocket outside saying it was live - it could have been a full second out and on your video would have appeared "Live". Can this somehow be connected to a WiFi hub to perform a wireless send?

Thanks man. Very useful. Gonna try this. However, what switcher would be the next step if we want to go SDI?

Hi Alex Have you done similar videos on other adapters/ converters for the ATEM mini ?? Our church has very recently installed this unit and although it works fine with HDMI we need to use a VGA input from a laptop occasionally. Have you tested any VGA to HDMI converters??

Have you tried to run the HDMI through a switch? ie: HDMI to transmitter to 30m cat6 into network switch, network switch to receiver and HDMI into Atem

Thank you, Alex! We are in the infancy of setting up a streaming system for the local high school sports programs. (Thanks, covid!) To get up and running fast, we used 50’ hdmi cables to the cameras but I really need to spread the cameras out more to make for more interesting transitions between angles. I was thinking about trying this and here you already did the testing for me! Thanks again.

Go for SDI runs instead of cat6. Blackmagic has SDI-HDMI converters, both 3G and 12G.

@@FenixEventProductions agreed. We now use the generic SDI-HDMI converters available on eBay for about $30 each. I make my own SDI cables from a cheap spool of quad shield coax and some budget connectors I found on eBay. The other options just weren’t reliable enough.

@@ChiefNonsense Thats great. You are better off with generic converters as most bypass HDCP and will be less of a headache in the future. HDMI is consumer grade equipment, not pro grade. I dont run longer than 5' HDMI cables, its just not reliable and the connection head is its weak point, they tend to bend and break easily.

I personally use the BMD SDI to HDMI micro convertors but this is a great idea if you don't need BMD camera control.
