The separatist parties that have been in power in Catalonia for a decade have lost their majority after the regional election on Sunday.
The Socialist party of the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, won the greatest number of seats and has become the only party capable of heading a coalition government, albeit with the help of separatists. The separatist party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), which led the regional government before the vote, dropped to third place but won the role of kingmaker.
The snap election - called because the ERC failed to pass a budget - took place amid a political crisis in Spain. Sánchez is facing the continued fallout from a corruption investigation into his wife and a controversial deal with the separatist Carles Puigdemont, the fugitive leader of the Junts per Catalunya party, who fled Spain after organising an illegal and failed independence bid in 2017.
