I'd luv one of these. There's a few model kits I'd like to have, but they're in the wrong scale. With this, just scan the kit and rescale!

I have several small projects I have in mind. My friend who is sharing the cost has more legitimate uses. He is a game designer and is skilled in 3D modeling, he is working on designing a board game. I will probably hang out with him this weekend and figure out a plan. I would really like for the 3d printer to be able to print in both PLA and BLA. Also, it might be nice if it could print with 2 applicators so that there can be some color differentiation, but there are other ways to do that.

There are several television shows that actually show that are a few 3D printers that can even make metals stronger than steel... and even lighter, which is after the end product has been soaked for several hours in a formulated clear liquid substance. Just do a YT "Metal 3D Printer"`search. Also very advanced electronics will soon be the next step most likely.

It think we might end up in some kind of online product store (something like a app store) where you can buy designs. A lot of things cannot be designed and developed for free. On the other hand a lot of expensive accessory could be designed at home.

Yes, someone else also mentioned the 3D pen, although I figured that would be more useful for artists. Well, what NASA is thinking about is something that has been proposed for other sectors in a completely none NASA related industry-construction. It is likely that they will 3D-house build before such a technique will be utilized on other worlds. there is a good ted video on this /watch?v=JdbJP8Gxqog I'll let you know what we decide on buying once we actually decide on something.

(I think what you meant to say is) It's okay, for the time being this is OUR technology! Those who want to use it will drive the free market in 3D printing. This is only because we are not reliant on complete assholes, for now. For the time being there is anything but a monopoly on 3D printers. So, it's one of those good stories unlike an unfortunate number of others. Thank goodness for "kickstarter", thank you. I and a friend of my'n are going to share the price of buying a 3D printer. ^.^"

The initial machines are already built. Hobbyists will build them. When it breaks you get your buddy to print the part you need. If a part is too complex to design yourself, go online and download it. The raw materials are already here, you just shred and reuse. Not who, what. And the answer is: the shredders. Hobbyists will design the machines which recycle stuff, and any bloke can print the machines at home. And yes, it's more complicated than that, but that's it basically.

Implying that plastic just grows on trees, sort of speak. It will take a wile to develop a machine that can print multiple different types of materials, like electronics.
@boltofthunder92

Just because it can conduct electricity doesn't mean it will be a good semiconductor. More over, you still need to take the raw materials and process them. On a large scale this is much cheaper than what it would cost for each of us to spend the time and money on the machine(s) and a farm to make our own plastics, also we would have to color it ourselves. Ow, and lets not forget about hemp plastics ^.^ (Henry Ford apparently built the bodies of his first cars out of hemp derived plastic.)

It's not quite that easy. The companies and individuals selling readied kits are trying to make a profit both on the kit and on replacement components often adding cost on top of retail. Since my comment two weeks go, I tracked down a number of suppliers but prices vary widely and many are eBay resellers. I still only have a vague idea on overall cost but it looks like you can build one for around $400-$450. Not bad. I suspect that'll be down to a few hundred in a couple of years.

End of capitalism? This for sure will never happen, but the accessory and plastic part industry will hate it. However, I think it could solve a lot of environmental problems caused by transportation of products from far away (e.g. products from china). For engineers it is already a must have tool, I'm designing a case for my first electronics prototype right now.

By the same logic all of those "illegal" drugs should have been taxed by now. How about a tax on breathing air? Some states make it illegal to collect your own water, true. But they don't tax it.

As a proud owner of a 3d printer, Let me just say, it is neither "Cheap" or, most definitely not "Easy". 300 pounds may seem like a good price, but you will spend much more money fiddling with it, and hours of frustration. I love my printer, but the way they are portrayed as being so simple is truly a farce. I really suggest you look very far into requirements and skills needed before building one.

This won't bring down capitalism, it will increase the amount of cheap capital in existence, enhancing capitalism. Capitalism is a good force, it's people working together voluntarily, and amassing useful capital (material possessions, labor-saving devices, wealth, etc). It might bring down fascism, or top-down "one size fits all" corporatism, though.

"Bring down global capitalism?" Ummm, who will initially build the machines? Who will assemble and calibrate the very complex and high-res models? Who is going to service them when they break? Who will design very complex parts? Who is going to produce the MASSIVE amounts of raw materials that widespread 3D printer use will require? Who will turn it into material usable to the printers? Who will design and build the machines that will recycle things built with these printers? Etc, etc, etc.

What tax? On the plastic material you have to buy, sure. Besides that they can't prove that you have been avoiding taxes by making things yourself. Selling things you make on the internet avoids the damn taxes. For a first machine this prints at a okay speed, it will improve over time. Your statement implies that growing garden food in your backyard would be taxed too. (Which is more probable here, in the USA as GM foods are a hot-bed of legal and moral issues.) WTF are you talking about?
