How many other vessels like yours are floating around in the same condition? Owners must be getting full surveys asap, I would.

I get asked a lot what would I buy, the issue is that boats are a very specific fit for what you want to do with them. It is much easier to construct a list of what I wouldn't consider. If I had a do over or a normal global environment to buy a boat in, I'd look between 50 to 60ft long, preferably with an aluminium hull and a decent carry capacity. No boat at the show met enough requirements that I would swap to it.

I’m glad you’ve learnt from your debacle. The big 3 prices should be half of brands like balance, antares, HH, st francis because they are half the quality. Surprisingly the quality brands I’ve just listed aren’t much more expensive than the ticking time bombs called the big 3.

Hi guys! I'm sure we'll meet up eventually. In the meantime, you mentioned solar panel placement. I own a 2018 L45 recently taken out of charter and among other things I'm doing a massive DC system design which of course includes LOTS of solar! Interested in your choice of panels, types, placement. Any wisdom you could share now that you have lived with it for awhile? I share your wanting of rigid over flex panels but will probably have to do both. How has your rigid coach roof placements experience been. Any additional advice? - Thanks!
@travelsketch
10 ай бұрын
For us, the more solar the better! All of our panels are rigid panels made using SunPower cells. The 7x 400W panels came from Cape Town; there are 4 panels on the rear solar frame and 3 on the coach roof. We're happy with the placement of the panels on the coach roof; they take up space we don't use and don't interfere with operating the sails or working on the mast. We're in the process of adding 2x 210W panels to the helm roof which are from Custom Marine Products in the US; we chose them because they were the right dimensions and voltage for our needs.

Not at your show but keep a look out for French Newcomers Windelo and their Eco friendly basalt hull vessels.. in 48 and 54 ft classes as 50 and 55ft and a radical blast from Seven years ago originally the British Rapier 550.. In the South african designs theres the Dudley Dix 55 and the Oxygen R5 and R6.. NZ company DeVillers is apparently developing an Aluminium 55ft expedition cat for Bali. They are also customising a design for another well known U tube familly of 4 Nahoa. 👍🏼😎 GRP and carbon fiber are currently two uncommonly environmentally expensive and unfriendly materials so there is a heavy focus on modern boat builders using materials like flax.... basalt , Bamboo, hemp and bio resins that allow the original materials to be reclaimed. There's also several new classes of thermo plastics used in race boats and a return to epoxy sealed woods as well as the arrival of chemically structurally modified softwoods that can be produced to be stronger than steel and many times lighter as well as being rot proof. The propulsion and electrical systems are mercifully beginning to catch up with the logic of hybrid generator systems where smaller very efficient diesels run at their best speed and constant loads only when needed to charge smaller combined battery packs or can run the Electric propulsion motors that are silent, pollution free, virtually maintainance free for years and take their energy from regen under sail, solar or ICE fueled generators.. powered by a new class of small light higher efficiency multi fuel ICE engines like the rotary liquid piston or linear free twin piston reciprocating design. The US and Canada meantime accounts for 50% of world boat construction sails... Old Fiberglass boats in landfill will still be hanging around and contaminating the environment for 400 years.. and if ground up and added to concrete the problem will come with erosion and demolition so it just puts it off untill and then you end up with a problem akin to asbestos fibers in the dust. 😕 Simillar with the forever chemicals in plastics and conventional epoxy resins.

@travelsketch

Personally I wouldn't buy either and nothing at the show met enough of our requirements that we'd swap over. With the Bali I wanted to highlight that they appear to be designing specifically for charter, and aren't trying to attract liveaboard owners. As a party platform to bob around on flat water for a week with some mates it would be great, but I'd never want to sail across an ocean in one.

The Bali is a charter boat, really the FP is as well. I'd never own one but I'd bash it around for a week. The FP, many people had suggested we check it as they say they have improved build quality. Admittedly they have but id never buy one. The deal breaker for many of these Mcboats is the broker contract if buying new, regardless of the build quality. Why buy new if you will have no warranty support?
