Of a few hundred turtles the three largest females i captured were all 55 pounds. A Florida big girl with eggs even June 10th. Oh you should palp the inguinal pocket for eggs you can feel them. And then i had an Alabama big girl 55.....oh man, there may have been 4....a Missouri and I think a Texas as well......all maxed out at 55. But Pritchards book shows Al Redmond with a 72 pound female, whats left, a shell. Ive heard of some others between 62 and 78 or so.

My largest wild ones have all been in the 50-55lb range, largest carapace was a Suwannee female. We did measure an 81lb female at a farm in Arkansas, but all those turtles were heavier than they should have been

Hey buddy, great vid!! I live in Maine and we don't have alligator snappers but we have some huuuuuge Commons! While watching this vid, I couldn't help but admire your hoop net traps. Mine only have 3 rings. I like the looks of your 4 ring traps. Would you mind sharing where you get them? I catch and release, photograph etc as you do. Happy hunting. Thanks! P.S. also, that huge tool you use for doing measurements? What is that? And the straps and scale? Sorry to be a bother. I have been doing this for over 20 yrs with the traps but never kept detailed records. You have inspired me!

The traps I’m using are supplied through Ga DNR and Santa Fe College, I don’t know where they are made, but I believe it’s from Nashville and they aren’t cheap. The measuring tool is calipers, metric. I think they have been called “tree calipers”, if that helps. For getting weight I use a Cabela’s digital scale, calf sling, and rebar.

@@GregsTurtleHaven hey man, much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Really enjoy your vids. Keep up the good work! I wish we had those monsters here in Maine! BTW, are those 3 ft hoops or bigger? We don't have turtles that big in Maine so I typically use the 30in ones.

Great video.I have an unrelated question for you.Have you noticed any difference in tubercle amount and size among north and south Florida populations of Florida Snappers? Also I’ve heard that captive bred FSTs are mixed with CSTs which is why most don’t have the extreme tubercles seen on their wild counterparts, any thoughts?

I’ve noticed west coast Florida snappers are darker with long flattened tubercles, east coast Florida snappers are lighter in color, with pointed tubercles, further up the East coast the tubercles are shorter, farther south they are longer. The largest Florida snappers come from lake okeechobee and the smallest from the Everglades. On those farms a lot of common snappers are mixed in, as they consider any snapper to be a snapper. I’ve seen lots of farmed hatchling Florida snappers without the classic traits. Bill Murry produces really nice ones, look him up. I hope that’s helpful

In Vietnam, there is a type of turtle listed in the red book and protected. That's the big-headed turtle. Try to find out about it.😍😍😍

Could female defensiveness have something to do with their need to exit the water for nesting as opposed to males who probably rarely, if ever, leave the water as adults?
