Wonder the pros and cons of wet brakes and rotors like Volvo does.

The older Cat trucks the D350E D400E and earlier , not counting the series 2 trucks, had regular brake pads. On some extremely hilly jobs we would be changing pads every 2 months. With the wet brakes I have trucks with well over 20,000 hours and haven’t had to change discs yet.

@@RasmussenEquipment that’s pretty interesting. I know on our Volvos a25c trucks we barely use the brakes as the trans and exhaust retarders kick in so hard.

Ya, on the D350E’s they had a hyd retarder mounted on the back of the engine and a Jake brake. The retarder was a joke, it barely did anything, we actually removed the handles just so the operators wouldn’t leAve them on by accident and overheat the trans oil. The Jakes worked good, they were a little weaker on the 3406’s but after re-powering with a C-15 they were better. But the main problem is trying to get the lazy operators to use the Jakes instead of the foot brake, even though the Jakes work automatically.
