In this video I'm in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, an Italian town in the province of Pescara in Abruzzo. On the occasion of the patronal feast of San Nicola da Tolentino, I visited the main place of worship in the village, namely the Cathedral of San Valentino e Damiano. Built around the 12th century to house the remains of the martyrs Valentino and Damiano da Terracina, it was completely rebuilt between 1771 and 1791, at the behest of the Vanvitelli family of Chieti with an 18th century layout. Damaged by the Avezzano earthquake of 1915, it was restored in 1926 by Antonino Liberi. In the thirties the facade was completed, and a twin bell tower was added to the existing one. The facade is marked by several orders of classical columns, by the portal and by a tripartite central window with an upper lunette, showing elements of neoclassical and neo-Gothic architecture. It forms a single head block with the bell towers that rise from the level of the facade with the belfry cells each covered by a Neapolitan onion dome. The church, with a rectangular Latin cross plan, develops inside in Baroque style. The side walls marked by round arches and altars support the barrel-vaulted roof. Looking at the façade, the concert bells are placed in the right belfry while the clock and the 2 bells attached to it are located in the left belfry in a wrought iron pinnacle. There are a total of 6 bells in the concert: the major bell is fixed and rings with the hammer while the remaining bells are electrified for momentum expanse and equipped with a striker. The ringings filmed in this video were performed for the Holy Evening Mass of San Nicola da Tolentino on 10 September 2022. The festive ringing consists of the ascending expanse of the 4 minor bells while the solemn one from the ascending expanse of the 5 minor bells. Unfortunately, the fifth bell had an engine failure, so it was rung manually by the undersigned. In the solemn sonata I thought of adding the touches of the major bell in order to play the real plenum. On feast days and in processions, a group of people organize themselves to play manually with clappers a very festive and lively ringing articulated in different sequences of descending strokes of all 6 bells.
