Was the Renaissance merely 15th century Italians raiding the old imperial Roman attic for ideas and models? Did Michelangelo, Raphael and other masters buy into the pagan ideal lock stock and barrel? Or were the artists of the Italian Renaissance aware of their own greatness and that of their unique Christian experience? This talk looks at the world of Italian Renaissance art, its debt to antiquity, its own innovations, and most importantly, its desire to best their pagan masters.
