Text from the Gospel & Homily
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.
On the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there." So the disciples went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup gave thanks, and gave it to them and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant which will be shed for many. Amen, amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the city of God." Then after singing a hymn, they went out to the mount of olives.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord.
Jesus Christ. Forgive me, I need to cheat a little bit today. The homily today comes by way of the book Seven Secrets of the Eucharist by Vinny Flynn. A very good book, easy read. I recommend it to anyone. Well wouldn't you know it, the 7th secret, the last chapter of the book, it's just too perfect not to share for a TV Mass for Corpus Christi Sunday. Secret seven, page 81: there is no limit to the number of times we can receive. I'm sure that confuses some of you. What Mr. Flynn is correctly observing is that we receive the Eucharist two ways. Sacramentally, and spiritually. This is going all the way back to Thomas Aquinas sacramental communion is when you go to church, knowingly receive Jesus Christ in a state of grace and physically consume the host. You can't do that without limit. Not even priests are supposed to do that more than 3 times a day. However spiritual communion is very simply a real and sincere desire to be with Christ. And that should be part of our Eucharistic experience every single time we are in the communion line. And what he's saying in the book is we're supposed to be thinking like that all day long. We should wake up on Sunday with that desire to be with Christ as well as on Tuesday night when we sit down for dinner and when we're stuck in a really boring meeting on Thursday afternoon. Our love for Christ should never be far from our thoughts. So what I'd like you to fold into your prayer life today for the solemn feast day of Corpus Christi. Spiritual communion is not a consolation prize for those who are unable to come to Mass. Now if you can physically come to Mass in a parish you have an obligation to do so but when that is impossible or inappropriate for you to do your spiritual communion is a very real thing. Jesus Christ knows you better than you know yourself and your sincere desire to be with him and to love him is no small thing in his eyes. He cherishes you all the more for that very desire. Let us always be in communion with Christ every day without limit.
