Apparently he recorded this around 1979, so perhaps was thinking of recording it. We're left with so many tangible tempting recordings by John. Still tugs at the heart as to what he had left to give us.

The thing is, the emotion of this version probably couldn't be bettered in the studio. Just glad we've got these home recordings. Like the 'Help' one and "I'm In Love" etc.

John and Paul would have sang this together so many times. They called each other Phil and Don. This was recorded when Paul was on top of the world and John was isolated in the Dakota. I bet we know who was on his mind while singing this that day.

Where are you getting all of that from? It makes for an interesting take but there is no way of knowing what John was think when he made this. You are making a lot of assumptions. He might not have given a damn about Paul at this point and been perfectly happy. He might have just had an argument with Yoko. He may have just watched a sad movie. We don’t know.
@michaelcory2578

This song had a lot of meaning for John and Paul. This is a beautiful cover and no doubt John would’ve wanted Paul to hear it as a message to him
@DCfromBC
2 жыл бұрын
@@yeadogthazmyboi based on several books from the people closest to him, interviews, and now the Get Back footage, we know how close Paul and John were and that John was devastated when they separated, and especially when Paul was ruling the world by himself while John lingered in obscurity. That's when these recordings come from. John and Paul referred to each other as Phil and Don since childhood, after their heroes the Everly Brothers. It's a fair assumption to hear this somber rendition and read John's emotions.

Such a shame that this haunting, far more sorrowful rendition of 'Cathy's Clown' is just a 'musical doodle' as it would've no doubt been a superb addition to John's body of work. A tantalising snippet of what might've been!

I think it’s pretty clear John is singing this to Paul. Not just because it was a song both of them loved as teenagers, but the word switching and pronoun switching John does really makes it seems like he changed the words to make it so he was singing TO somebody and not about somebody. And his voice has a tone that is so loving and tender, which the original song isn’t

Well no they wouldn't be together anyways. John just wanted to quit the Beatles and be alone and leave the band before he was ever shot. John also did not want to tell anyone that he was leaving The Beatles. Yet Paul McCartney told the press which greatly angered John. So it was just Ironic that he was shot and killed. So in the end they would not be together even if he was still alive. Maybe, I wish :D But still there are the factors that George is dead, and John may have died of something else
