My grandfather had the very same seed drill. I used to ride on it as a child, making sure that the harrows had gone over while turning on the headlands. Also, making sure that drills weren't blocked and that cups were full when the drill was running low. A normal childhood back then. I loved every minute of it. The smell of diesel fumes, soil, and grandads Manikin cigar blended into an addictive perfume. Looking forward to grandma bringing sandwiches and cold tea to eat in the field. Heavenly!

Right , it's probably safe to tell this story now , as the other 2 guys involved in proceedings are now dead ! In 1974 my best mate & me were detailed , in late April , to flat roll a 14 acre field with a Ford 5000 & Archie Kidd flat roll , we did it without incident , but then as lads do , ignored my mate's dads orders to keep away from the circular cattle feeder "with that or it will go straight through the crust & you pair of buggers will be thoroughly stuck right there " .We got too near the feeder , the roll went , predictably straight through said crust & held 75 Ford Motor Company horsepower right where they were despite all our attempts to go at it from another angle etc , diff lock in , nope , slew brakes shuttled , nope , etc .Defeated , & knowing full well we were going to get one hell of a red - hot telling off , we unhooked the roll & slunk back to the farmyard with the 5000. My mate , not me , got one almighty roasting , verbally , then was told to grab 2 cans of (granville motivator ) spray out the workshop & meet his dad at "The Crawler ". It was a Caterpillar D2 with no hydraulics or electrics but for a petrol donkey engine , his dad started the donkey with a thin length of rope , then it took him full power with both arms to engage & hold in the clutch mechanism that drives the main diesel , he was then a powerfully built scotsman so I knew how hard it was to keep the levers there , & he kept shouting at my mate to spray them cans up the air intake , after about 15 minutes of concentrated effort the white smoke out the diesel exhaust started to turn grey , I shouted to my mate "she's gonna start ! ".My mate shouted back how do ya know ? , I said that this was what our old & at that time knackered M-F 35 4 cyl did before it could fire , & to just keep going , get the engine hotter , build the compression temperature up . a few more seconds & the most tremendous roar filled the air, ,along with the ground getting shook a bit near the crawler . She was going , full blast . They said she hadn't run for years , but it was a real treat to be involved . The crawler was driven to the roll , by mate's dad , & ONE carefully executed straight pull later the roll was straight out it's hole , with very little further ground damage . Nothing on earth beats tracks for sheer grip . Nothing beats a crawler . Best Regs .

Wow, that is a great set-up you have, and as said below a superb seed bed too. A big play is made of the Minimal Cultivation technique, however it can leave so much material on top it becomes a breeding ground for slugs in wet conditions.
