I’m a lift operator in big sky, once had a ski patroller go up smelling like a dispensary.
I'm just finishing up my patroller and can lend some additional info here. This guy was super chill. I know patrollers get a bad rap for being uptight or downright rude, but until you've hauled someone out of a closed zone 3 hours past dark or had to open a SAR with the county sheriff, you're really just ignorantly rolling the dice with little consideration to the time these folks spend keeping people safe. You ride the lift, you follow the rules. Ducking lines means getting your pass pulled. I backcountry ski with a beacon and float when I'm ready to take the risk and liability on myself.

I doubt it. Maybe in the midwest where safety patrol is all done by volunteers. Ski patrol is highly trained and very strict. Now if you see the park crew hanging out in the woods they are definitely burning one before shift. All them guys smoke. haha.

Nah ski patrol is a big deal up in Utah, they got a whole education system for people who are actually able to get in. Know a guy who had to wait 7 years to get in. Most of them live in poverty but love their lives.

Mc McPherson Usually from their own stupidity and going beyond their own limits. Thats why you should start from the bottom and work your way up with difficulty (whether that be hiking, camping etc.) some ski patrol isn’t gonna teach you much about survival other than the obvious basics that any logically thinking person can understand. That, and It’s just a waste of money. Maybe they were doing it for fun but you could be skiing instead🤦🏻 thanks for the comment tho👍

The rules are there to prevent people from making dumb choices and killing themselves. At European resorts the mentality of going off piste into areas you don’t understand on your first day of skiing is not near as prevalent as it is in the US. The way American culture is you need these rules or people would be dying on the slopes every day.

We should’ve honestly. And the east coast sucks other than a couple resorts. Thing is, when conditions are bad on the slopes they’ll be even worse in the woods, whereas the west coast doesnt have that issue lol

@@xventure8771 By bad do you mean icy? We get plenty of iced over & scraped out areas in far higher consequence areas out here. It doesn't even look like deep snow suffocation/tree wells are even a factor at this resort. Anyway, it seems like they closed that area since they didn't want to risk an encounter between a skier & someone participating in their exercise in retrospect- which makes since. However, it still just baffles me why an area as tame this would be closed during daylight hours, under any other circumstance.
@xventure8771

@@thurston5173 well if it was scraped out... then there wouldnt be a problem haha. Problem arises when the untouched powder freezes over, and it becomes a nightmare of ice chunks and its impossible to turn. Btw thanks for watching and commenting👌

one tim ein 1993 at Red Mountain me and a friend were blazing a blunt on the lift chair. We didnt realize two fully clothed RCMP officers were riding the chair behind us. The smelled the weed and told us to wait at the top. Me and my bro are very strong skiers. At the top we just start ski skating to get some speed then bomb down the ridge to get to high spirits. High spiriits is a triple black diamond tree run with multiple drops all over the place . Its deep snow so we just rip threw there like its nothing. At the bottom we go to our car head home which is about 10 minute drive switch clothes and hats and head back to the hill to enjoy the pow. Those cops had no chance catching LOLZ noobs.
