Shortly after setting our anchor, a storm came in with 55 mph winds and 75 mph gusts, throwing our boat around like a little toy, crashing us into another boat, and then leaving us on the land. Yep, our anchor didn't hold.
It was one of the scariest days of sailing for us.
It started out as a really calm day of sailing from Annapolis, and through the C&D Canal. That changed once a sailboat that passed us told us about an incoming storm.
We took their advice and followed them into Chesapeake City for the night. After anchoring and the storm came in, we felt our boat continue to move around in the storm. Stephen was concerned we would smash into one of the other boats, so he took the helm to steer our boat away from the other boats nearby.
He prevented us from smashing into a catamaran, but not into the power boat. He told me to hold on, that we were going to hit the other boat. I didn't have time to do anything but hold on. I heard a huge crash as we were knocked right into the other one.
After a few minutes, we went up on top and saw that the storm had moved us quite a bit from where we had anchored, about 250 feet, and almost onto the boat ramp. We were grounded.
We checked with the boat we crashed into ~ luckily no one was hurt ~ and exchanged information.
Not having much faith in our anchor, I started calling the marinas nearby, and no one answered. Finally, one of the marinas called us on the radio and offered us a spot on their dock.
After moving over there, and tying up, the dockhand told us that the storm caused 35 trees to fall, scaffolding off the local bridge to break off and total the cars below, and downed a lot of the phone lines.
After dinner and a good night's sleep, we woke up with the sun to continue on our journey north. And yes, we followed our new friends who told us about the storm.
