There is one thing. These boys were fairly young and thus would be thinner than any adult presumably. The theory is that the boys found a very tight restriction and were able to get into it and through it and traveled in an unknown direction and either got stuck and were unable to turn around or there was a cave in. In the darkness of a cave it is possible for a tight restriction to look like just a small over hang and to appear as though it does not go any further. The adults will think like adults but will sometimes fail to see what a child may see. A child could have looked and saw one thing where an adult could have seen another

The kidnapping theory seems like a huge stretch. These were kids that already had a history of exploring dangerous caves. Most likely they were trapped someplace that the searchers overlooked, and then possibly that area was subsequently sealed off by the construction company trying to prevent it from recurring. Also a criminal would be far more likely to go after a single kid, not three at once.
@xtensionxward3659

Yeah... It's theoretically possible so I'd hope the police at least looked into it. Buuuut I find it unlikely. I think the construction company either covered it up, or the boys died in some small crack/crevice that only small pre-teen ish boys could access. I can totally see the construction company doing this, especially on a mega project like the interstate. And I can also see the kids getting stuck and dying, it's happened, many, many times before. Either they went in somewhere so tight they couldn't ever be reached by adults, or they fell down a crack and wedged themselves (a couple stories like that have even been featured on this channel). Cue the kids trying to rescue each other and all getting stuck or lost. I mean it could be the kids were found by the construction company in a hole/cave they would've been liable for, so instead of alerting authorities they just filled it in. So many possibilities. Kidnapping/murder seems like a reach. A cover up/accident seems far more likely. But all are possible, and stranger things have happened.
@zxyatiywariii8

@@nexaentertainment2764Well said. I used to work post-disaster recovery, and my niche skill was my small size; I could access narrow debris voids, and safely traverse unstable rubble fields without breaking through. However, their small size probably got them trapped in a place adults couldn't reach, and the company covered it up. Maybe in 100 years, on whatever is KZitem then, there will be a story about how their skeletal remains were found in an area the company probably knew about but covered up.

Interestingly enough, Murphy's Cave (also referred to as Lost Boys Cave) is being re-surveyed to examine different sumps/restrictions. It turns out that the while a good portion of the cave was accurately surveyed, the primary focus was to cover as much main passage as possible. The surveyors covered a lot of ground this way. However, it ended up leaving a lot of smaller/sumped leads that were marked on the map but unexplored. This weekend, I was supposed to be on one of the "Skinny Teams" that examined the tighter leads, but the trip was postponed due to delays in finishing a different project nearby. In the 2nd story with the tiny chamber, you mentioned candles in the tiny chamber. That tells us exactly what happened. The water filled tunnel is effectively a U joint (edit: P trap) like in most kitchen sinks. The purpose of U-joints (edit: P traps) is to prevent gas exchange between the two sides of the pipe. If someone lit a candle in that tiny chamber... especially if they left it lit when they left the chamber... it would consume all the oxygen in the room. They definitely made it to the other side, couldn't breathe with the lack of oxygen, had to wait for everyone to clear the tunnel, and passed out on their way back out.

Amount of candles used in the cavern and amount of oxygen consumed in keeping them lit. All adding up over time to make the cavern and its air space more and more dangerous. Probably bad enough to be the first person to stumble upon such a place. And in this case, these poor kids were always fated to be the last. The first story pisses me off to no end. When I was in my teens and through mid 20s, my brother and I explored caves and old mines in the deserts of the American Southwest. There was no internet to learn anything from, just spelunking and rock climbing magazines. The one, most major warning that was never avoided in any article was to beware of water within a cave. If this information was available only in print back in the 1980s, how much more would it be at an explorer's fingertips with the internet? It blows my mind that people would enter water inside a cave without absolute preparation for the experience.

There was scheduled construction that day in which explosives were used based off witness accounts. It seems most likely they were in an uncharted cave system when the already unstable ground caved in. Rest In Peace to those 3 and don’t go in caves.

As someone who lives near many many caves, including the longest in the world, who visits them many times a year, I find these caving tragedies fascinating. Not because caves are inherently evil or overly dangerous, say compared to a mountain, but because its almost always the result of poor decision making. A cave is literally just a hole in the ground, what happens there - that's up to you.

My husband's family is from Hannibal. I know they have had family there for at least the last 100 years. When visiting them they have told us stories of sink holes opening up. In particular a large one 15 feet deep near a school on the south side of town within sight of Lover's Leap. I think it's possible the boys could have met their fate in an unknown cave as the area in littered with them. I'll have to ask my husband's Nana (72) and Nan (94) what they think next time we visit.

My gut tells me the three boys are somewhere in the cave and there was a cave in. Experts can make mistakes and perhaps the cave in area was overlooked because of how many new areas were opening up or closing off due to the construction activity. I’m not a caver though and I don’t know how accurate their maps were of the cave, and I don’t know how obvious it would be to see a cave in and know if it was fresh and recent or old.

I live in Missouri. It's true we do have over 7,000 caves with many more believing that number to be double just not yet known. These stories make me feel confident in my past choices not to go "exploring" these cave systems. I remember the last time I did was on a field trip in middle school. One of the advisors took a few of us from the main room of the cave to show us a restricted area no one was allowed, and point out why it was restricted...he pointed onto the ground of the cave a few feet ahead where it then dropped off into a dark abyss. He kicked a rock over the edge of it and I swear we didn't here the rock hit the bottom for like 15 seconds... No, thank you. 5 years later my friend got real into going into caves and had invited me along one time. All it took was me looking at the entrance (a meter or so wide opening you had to squeeze and crawl into before it opened up several yards later to a room) for me to say NOPE. Never have even considered another cave excursion since and i am perfectly content with that 😂

My condolences to all the families in these stories. I live in Missouri and we have so many caves in my state (my dad has taken my family to pretty much all of them). In 5th grade we went to tour the caves in Hannibal and learned about the Lost Boys. I am a big true crime fan and since this is a case from my state I have researched it a lot. The siblings theory of a cover up by the construction company seems pretty plausible. However the theory of Gacy I find just as plausible bc not mentioned in this video was the fact that he was living in Waterloo Iowa (not Chicago) during this time and his mother was living in Little Rock Arkansas. So if he went to see her, he would've taken hwy 61 which takes you right through Hannibal. So that on top of the fact that a mysterious man was seen hanging around the cave during that time and wasn't seen anymore after the boys went missing, is imo a very good link to Gacy killing them.

I’ve binged all of Scary Interesting’s videos and the algorithm brought me to the Dive Talk channel and I’ve watched a ton of their stuff too. But I have learned so much from these channels I can see all the mistakes people make and I’m yelling at the screen like a seasoned caver. I know the five rules of cave diving, and what the depths are for recreational diving, when you’d need to change your mixture to trimix, what nitrogen narcosis is and what it feels like, I know how long I’d need to decompress, and of course the rule of thirds. Second story- I can't understand why they wouldn't go one at a time and do something like flick the rope in a very specific pattern so that the next person to go back through knows their way won't be obstructed by another person. I wonder if walkie-talkies would've worked in the cave at that distance and could've been utilized to verify the successful passage of each person. Granted there could still be people getting stuck in the inner room if someone did not successfully make it back and drowned, thus blocking the entrance; but it seems like it'd be a hell of a lot more likely they'd survive if one person did drown and the others still in the room had to wait for fire rescue to drain water and replenish the 0². Just my thoughts anyway.

the story told here depicted the tunnel like it was wide enough that people could have turned around if they didn't get lost, but I'd seen another channel do this story, and they said the tunnel was very narrow, so there was no way anyone could turn around, once they started going into the tunnel.

I can attest to the story around Hannibal, and the number of caves around here. I'm a farmowner in the nearby area, my family has been on this land for 4 generations, and even just on our plot of land there are 4 small caves, and one coal vein cave that was originally a mine, but the family closed it up before I was born. Even up until when I was growing up in the 90's, we still went out and wormed ourselves up into caves- I discovered the fourth cave on property myself as a kid! It's most likely (and most believed around here) that they found what they thought was a new entrance but was really a different cave altogether, wormed their ways in, and got stuck by either a cave-in, or if it was a creek cave, got washed up and drowned.

When they went missing, the company had an employee call into the caves, if they didn't hear an answer, cover it up; they don't want the liability. But it is easy to blame it on a corporate identity. My landlord called to tell me there was a rescue in the cave and I drove down there to see if it was my friends when I couldn’t get ahold of them. Luckily it wasn’t them having issues in the cave. I definitely feel bad for those young men. Apparently the second guy to go down said “dear god help me cause I have no idea what I’m doing” right before disappearing into the waterfall where he had an uncontrollable rappel smashing into his trapped friend below on the ledge. Poor guys were in over their heads. I don’t know. If only I didn’t cancel. Things might’ve been different.

In the 2nd story, what would've saved them are 3 separate ropes: 1) the existing guide rope, 2) a signal/pull rope, held by the person outside and tied to the hands of the person coming back (a tug on it tells the person outside "one of us is now coming outside"), 3) a secondary pull rope, tied to the end of the signal rope, which lets those in the chamber reel the signal rope back in for the next person. If they swam through separately (NOT all at once), if a person lost consciousness, the person could still be pulled out from outside by the signal rope, without blockage.
