Nice test. Can you do one with a few of the classic mic's from the glory days of CB? The Turner +3B and +2, The Shure 526T, the D-104 lollypop etc. Those are the classics I'd like to hear compared. Nobody else has done it.

It would be interesting to put a Telex RK 56 into the mix since it's completely different than the Chinese Road King 56. Over the airwaves sounds different also. It would be interesting to plug a digital recorder into a receiving radio and adjust the Vu meter so it doesn't overload the recorder and do this test over the airwaves with a line level recording on a receiving radio so you can hear what it actually sounds like over the airwaves.

I second that request. I know for a fact the old Telex-Turner is a great mic, but I'm curious about the new ones on both build quality and sound.

Hey ruffyooo. I love the old roadkungs also. I honestly don't like the new ones very much though. They do seem to be built well still and I love the feel, but the sound quality has really dropped off. I'd still use one and in fact they sound better with certain radios.

The Ranger Elimenated the fan noice while you were talking, and when you turned the echo off, it sounded like you were just speaking into the recording mic, not through the radio....to me, the Ranger was the Best, at most natural sounding.

Take it to someone who knows what they're doing without clipping limiters. Tune only, no clipping or soldering. They are actually uniden radios and will out punch a cobra 29 if tuned properly. You can get more out of this radio than a cobra.

can i ask you to do a video abt the talk-back speaker? i hope you wont think me a fool but i've had this dream forever now abt using a modified cb mic as a car-karaoke system. this video made me realize that instead of teaching myself electronics and audio engineering so i could rewire the mic and my stereo/speaker system to allow me to just pick up my mic and hit the PTT switch to sing whenever a good song suddenly came up on shuffle, i could instead (maybe) just install the radio as-is along with a talk-back speaker. seems so much simpler!

Ummm ....yeah, still a ranger 198 fan followed by the Astatic 636. Here's a video with a little better audio. kzitem.info/news/bejne/u4aey5mNcpeoppg I think the roadking mics have a narrow frequency response and are pretty bright, but that sometimes translates to clarity for some people's ears. A lot is subjective though and people hear differently and it also depends on the voice. Thanks for the input.

All 3 radios are designed the same. There have been been different updates over the years where one may use a mosfet final (I’m not a big fan of mosfets but whatever) and another might have FM, but they’re essentially the same. The Cobra have been the most reliable radio by far over the decades. I’ll sell 2500 radios before I find a factory defect. I haven’t opened a pc78 for a few years so I can’t even say what their board is like. Cobra just updated their board with the same basic layout but a few adjustments are missing. They now have FM. If I was choosing one, it would be Cobra but I wouldn’t blame anyone if they went another route.
