I just recently switched to the CBN wheels and it was one of the best additions I've added to my shop. I absolutely love them.

Like Stuart Batty said, they are good for about 5 years for a production turner. I will agree with that. They do go through a break in period, which can last 6 months or so, then they stay at that point for a long time.

Funny how woodturners have NOT been using CBN wheels for a LONG time...yet the masters have produced remarkable works of art. CBN wheels are nice. They are an upgrade...but the skill of the turner needs acknowledged.

1. CBN wheels come balanced and stay balanced. My non-CBN frequently needed to be rebalanced. 2. I’ve read that grinding softer steel will build up on CNB wheels clogging them up. Is there any truth to that?

Hi John, CBN wheels are balanced and stay balanced. I would grind only hardened steels and keep soft steels away from CBN wheels.

I've been using a pair of 8" Oneway Aluminum Oxide wheels (80 grit and 54 grit) since 2000. The 54 grit wheel is less than 6" now, and the 80 grit is about 7". I decided to go with an 80 and 180 from Vince. So far, I'm very happy with the upgrade. It's taking a little bit to get all of the tool angles readjusted to the new diameters. A couple of notes. I have one Oneway table and one McNaughton table. The McNaughton table has a notch cut to straddle the wheel. I use it to sharpen scrapers. I had to cut the notch wider to fit around the CBN wheel. I also have found that I use my grinder for assorted other grinding tasks with non-HSS material. For example, I cut some bolts short and needed to taper the thread entry to get rid of the burrs. I need to keep an Aluminum Oxide set-up, so I'm going to drop my old wheels on an inexpensive grinder motor from HD. Also, Vince is correct about the HP of the grinder. My grinder is a 1 HP JET and it brings the CBN wheels up to speed quickly, and coasts for almost 5 minutes after power off. Don't use a whimpy motor with the CBN. Joe
