Gary did a good job filling in, he is missing something. But I have to say GREAT to see you back in shop working on bikes. I change the oil in the fall for its winter sleep. Then it does not spend winter with dirty, acidy oil in engine. Love the statement filling filter before install, AGREED. Another excellent video, thanks for your hard work.

As always a great video. A minor point to remember to take off the engine oil filter removal tool/ socket prior to bagging the used filter. Easy tip - if the engine oil filter is vertical (up & down, it is ok to partly fill the filter), but as stated if horizontal (on its side, don't put any oil in the filter).

I cannot say all manufacturers parts are the same, but nearly every after market oil filter would let oil out if any positions other than when fitted underneath the engine, all OEM filters I have bought, have a sort of baffle, you can fill or half fill and fit in most positions without spilling any oil, more expensive for sure, and sometimes not in stock, I was told the baffle was there to stop the filter from emptying completely, so next start up it was primed.

You won't. The engine galleries still have oil in, the engine is under no load and the pump will pressurise the system in a few seconds.

Someday, in a Fantasy land far, far away, a motorcycle manufacturer will say: "Hmm, well, obviously the owner will need to do oil changes, so, let's change the drain plug into a petcock that you can just turn and drain. Oh, and lets put the oil filter in a really easy place to get to so no oil will ever get on any other part of the motor. Lastly, let's make the filler hole easy access also, and big enough so you don't have to go find a funnel. Maybe we could even print right on the filler cap the viscosity and volume of oil needed!" And...now we're back... to reality. C'mon manufacturers, get it together! - Paul, USA

I think Harley Davidson did that which is probably why their underpowered engines are so huge. My 400 may be awkward, but it is tiny, light weight and the same power as a HD 883.

While you're correct in saying that the engine has an oil pump, filling or partly filling an oil filter can help achieve oil pressure quicker as the pump hasn't got to fill the filter, some bikes can also be susceptible to air locking the pump (some zx10r's for example) filling the filter can help prevent this. It's even more important on commercial and large car engines as the filters can be larger and pressure will be lost for a longer period of time while the filter fills. 👍
