RIP Pat Summerall. THE greatest NFL announcer ever. Didn't scream or overemote. Didn't need to. His understated approach made NFL telecasts must-see-TV,even if your team wasn't involved. He and Brookshier probably having fun right now in the broadcast booth in the sky. True class and elegance.

Pat Summerall was "THE" voice of CBS Sports and then FOX Sports. You knew it was a big event on the NFL when Pat and John were calling the games. Summerall and Venturi were the best golf play by play and analyst ever. Jim Nantz and Verne Lundquist are the two closest people who remind you of Pat when calling major sports events.

One thing people forget about Pat Summerall was that, not only was he the lead commentator for CBS' NFL coverage until they lost it following the 1993 NFL season, but he was also the lead commentator for CBS' golf coverage for many years (except when Vin Scully was the lead commentator for the Masters from the mid-70s through 1982), as well as CBS' U.S. Open tennis coverage. And what many people don't know is that Summerall also was the lead commentator for the NBA on CBS the first year the NBA was on CBS (the 1973-'74 season), and teamed up with Rick Barry to call the '74 NBA Finals between the Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Rest in peace to the voice of the REAL NFL on CBS, the NFC version. Pat Summerall will always be the voice of CBS Sports in my opinion. I picture him and John Madden calling the dream NFL game in heaven. Rest in peace to the both of them.

Pat was 'comfortable'. He knew the game but didn't need to pound you over the head with his knowledge. He let the pictures do the work for him. He just needed three words to describe a play - "Aikman, Irvin, Touchdown!" Or sometimes two when it's first and goal from the two - "Riggins, Touchdowwn!" The best there ever was or will be.
