Subitizing is a fun word that kids love. It simply means recognizing quantities instantly. For example, when students roll a dice, we want them to be able to instantly recognize the quantity rather than counting each dot.
Subitizing is a very important skill for young students. Subitizing helps develop a deep understanding of number and number relationships. This skill is vital for later mathematical learning. Being able to recognize an amount quickly helps students compute number faster and have deeper understanding.
We start by introducing smaller number and building to bigger numbers. We also start by introducing familiar patterns and then begin showing less familiar patterns. By viewing different arrangement of numbers, children learn that the number of objects in a group will be the same even if the arrangement is different.
We also encourage students to talk about how they see numbers. For instance, students may say that they see two sets of three.
There are several ways to practice subitizing. Playing games with dice and dominoes naturally helps your child subitize.
• Dice
• Dominoes
• Dot Plates
• 5 and 10 Frames
• Rekenreks
