Occasionally I hear something from Max Roach that almost makes me believe in ESP. This is one of those things. It's incredible how ON TOP of Cecil he is in this video, anticipating virtually his every move. The other one I can think of is a guest spot with the World Saxophone Quartet, where he anticipates the activity of FOUR other minds simultaneously in a free context. Spooky-Max. Thanks for sharing it.

I heard them together at Columbia U around this time. As this clip makes clear a match made in heaven. Together they attain an inspired level of virtuoso music-making that can only astonish and elevate anyone with ears to hear...

What beautiful lyrical playing from Cecil. And as for Max, well, and they say drummers can't hold a tune??!! I had this transcribed for my wedding, during the signing of the register, although we added a bass part and lyrics for welsh male voice choir. It went down a treat with the congregation, but I think the vicar lost the thread around about the 21/8 section. Perhaps it was just because our players weren't quite of the same standard, or maybe they were still hammered from the stag do.

Ha ha I have heard something that (can) match this .During my by-pass surgery on May 16th 2016, under anesthesia I saw Monk standing and playing an upright, with Ornette smiling at him with his alto in his hands and blowing some crucial lines at all the right moments. I continue to smoke ...basically to need another by-pass just to see the second set....:)))

@DarkeningSkies1 I think it's moooch better than the original...Here Max is on top of CT whereas on the lp he was reacting & by the time he reacted taylor was already gone & on to something else but here he has ct's theme he's working just that in his own zone & here he is ahead of ct and ct is responding to max's ideas moreso....works out great! Wish i was Here!!

AGREED!! This is much better. I think Roach is the greatest but I was surprised the lp was released. Max was really behind, even lost at times, it happens even to the best..CTs music is so complex...This is very good. I think Max's best free jazz performances were with Braxton tho. Those duo's are amazing & Max is simply an astonishingly excellent avantgarde drummer on those duets. He was almost at the level of european improvisors like Oxley, Bennink, Lovens et al
