Historically known as Empire Day, then Commonwealth Day, then May 24th, and now Bermuda Day/Heritage Day this holiday has always been at the heart and soul of what makes Bermuda special. Argued to be the second most popular holiday in Bermuda - behind Cup Match - Bermuda Day has so much to offer. Gombeys, half marathons (St. Georges to Bernard Park), boat racing, picnics, camping, eating, drinking, dancing, beach days, and a parade, if you are wanting to experience a Bermudian summer at its fullest, this is a great time to come down.
Typically the last Friday in May, the island tends to shut down in preparation for the numerous festivities. You will see tape everywhere signaling people are marking their territory in preparation for the parade. Bermudians are super friendly so don’t be surprised if you end up making a few friends. All in all, this holiday is a sight to behold, and this video only captures a fracture of the goings on within the Sargasso Sea.
Feel free to comment below your favorite Bermuda Day activities/memories.
If you are a tourist feel free to ask questions. Bermudian culture is truly one of a kind.
