Saka Dawa Festival Tingmosgang Ladakh
You can feel spiritually lifted during Saka Dawa Festival, the enlightenment of Sakyamuni (Gautama Buddha). This is an important and famousfestival in Ladakh and it is noted to be one of the holiest Buddhist holiday. Saka Dawa is celebrated on the fourth month in the Tibetan calendar which is held during the month of June. It is believed that on this day Buddha had achieved awakening. The name behind the festival has an interesting story behind it, while Dawa means “month” in Tibetan. Saka on the other hand means star, the word comes from a Tibetan astrology and it is deeply associated with the full moon of the fourth lunar month.
It is also considered very auspicious to celebrate this festival during the full moon or new moon day. It is considered to have more strong effect during the festival. During this festival, there are few things that are followed according to Buddha teachings. The followers refrain from killing and eating animals also the animals are set free for the day. During the festival, you can notice the lamas chanting the mantras 'Om Mani Padme Hum’ which means hail to the jewel and the lotus.
