Wow, so . . . it's probably really going to bother you that Ms. Davis in a personal letter to Ms. Streep, not only commended her on her talent, and "formidable" body of work, but also crowned her as her worthy successor. At the time of the writing Betty Davis was considered the greatest living actress . . . ever. Guess Meryl CAN shine those shoes . . . Look it up.

You a silly silly thanngg, you, Chrissie Davis, you silly thanngg. ps, Ms. Davis was always always performing, and I, who love her sincerely, see her performance. Ms. Meryl lives the character, and I never see the Streep under the character. Bette Davis very much admired Meryl Streep, so YOU A SILLY SILLY THANNGG.

I agree about Bette Davis. I've seen almost all her films and in each role, she was just another version of herself. Although, that's also partially the reason why I'd watch those films in the first place, just to see her.

Despite that I love Meryl Streep, the whole business of celebrity is just one big fucking circle jerk. I mean they do act so very important, when really they're just actors - one of the most useless jobs in the world. I appreciate the art and talent, but just crazy how they're treated.

***** Of course I'm fucking jealous, these people live in a constant state of self congratulation, of people never ever saying no to them, and of living without the stresses of monetary problems (or any real life problems, as almost all of those are money relative). And all for what? They're just actors. Not doctors, or scientists, or highly regarded politicians, teachers or whatever else that is important. People don't give a fuck about any of those, but we throw millions for someone to stand in front of a camera and imitate someone else. And this doesn't mean I don't think the arts or acting isn't important, or a hard job, but the amount of privilege they're allowed for just acting is grossly obscene. If you think that's fair then you're obviously very privileged yourself.

I agree. And the only time they do get awards is when they take on the role of a real life person (scientist, mathematician, doctor, politician, etc.) who made a difference. I do think actors are important, I admire the art form and films are incredibly influential and a powerful medium, but I don't think they should be paid the outrageous salaries they demand nor be treated like gods.

I've always been fascinated by the idea that as people age their 'nature' or character becomes increasingly etched on their faces and it becomes easier to tell what kind of a person they are. Take Shirley MacLaine for example, she just looks like a bitter, unpleasant woman by default...and Meryl Streep - the polar opposite!
@patricias5122

It really is true how our character gets permanently etched into our faces as we age. When you're young, you can hide a lot w/ a facade, but as you get older, the expressions you hold do get etched into your face and it's there for those that care to notice.

As good as Meryl Streep is, there have been and are other actresses who are just as brilliant who do not get the recognition maybe because they don't have, or didn't have, the power she does in Hollywood. Meryl Streep in my opinion is no greater an actress than Katherine Hebpurn, Shirley MacLaine, Sally Fields, Bette Davis, Olivia de Haviland, Ingrid Bergman, Viola Davis There are some roles these women have taken on that Streep would not have compared to. No one like Olivia de Haviland in Snake Pit; Hepburn in Lion in Winter, Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple, etc. Streep deserves praise for her acting abilities but no more so than any of these other women or even the women who were brilliant supporting actresses like Thelma Ritter, Shelley Winters, etc

Helen Mirren is an excellent actress too. I'd put her up there w/ Streep for sure. I can see where Mirren would have more guy appeal, she has a sex appeal and presence that Meryl doesn't quite have. Meryl is very feminine though and that can be really appealing for a lot of people. I'm not sure Mirren quite has the range that Meryl does though.
