I'm a tattooer from NY. Was tattooing in the city during pretty much all this and know many of these people personally. This barely scratches the surface. He's a deeply abusive and exploitative boss, his artists get tiny fractions of the exorbitant prices he makes them charge, and he hires international artists so he can control their green cards. His corporate, soulless minimalism has infected the NY tattoo scene with endless money hungry copycats making endless identical, artless, minimalist shops, scavenging the clients who want Bang Bang tattoos but not Bang Bang prices. I cannot describe the number of times myself and my coworkers were told we MUST duplicate $1500 single needle tattoos with the constitution of a spider's web, all for $180 ($90 once the shop took its cut), and god help you if you told the client the honest truth of how these things would look in 3 years.

Im not even from NY, or the us and my old mentor definitely follows this bang bang model in a pretty poor country. He just targets international clients so he can use them as contacts to travel to Europe or whatever. But the shops here in the Cape Town scene has reworked so many of his tattoos because he tattoos so light, they basically fade. I just didn't like how he started ignoring his local clients and prioritized international clients with more money, in such a suck up way. Anyways, bang bangs influence is far and wide unfortunately.

It’s that most tattoo artist become tattoo artists just to tattoo not because they’re artists who like to create art or have a passion for art . One time I went to a tattoo shop to get a tattoo and asked a tattoo artist for advice on how to make a good tattoo apprenticeship portfolio to get a apprenticeship , and I asked what I could do to make my portfolio stand out . He told me he never made one which was a shock to me because I wondered how he wounded up getting an apprenticeship. The shop was just like bang bang tattoos there was no art on the walls whatsoever , just certificates which bummed me out because looking at tattoo flash always inspires me when it comes to creating designs. Before the tattoo artist even tattooed me he just traced every part of another client’s tattoo design including the filigree .

The shop being "about the art we're making not the art we've made" is the most pretentious thing. It feels more like them saying they're too good to have to advertise their work. Also, Wong's issue with dark-skinned work not being featured can be such a self-fulfilling prophecy. Tattoos look different on different skin tones, if you have darker skin and people with the skill to tattoo your aren't advertising that fact then you don't know where to get a tattoo that will show up well. If Wong's IG showed darker-skin work it would result in more work from people with darker skin. That's how advertising works.

@@spicypillow I don't think he is just screwing super rich people. Also, he is creating a dynamic around tattooing that just isn't what I recognise. Obviously he CAN use whatever business model he likes, but the vast majority of tattooists don't work like this - the super expensive ones produce bespoke really beautiful pieces that have taken a lot of time to produce, the more every day ones knock out a variety of stuff with varying degrees of skill, at reasonable prices for their customers. He exploited the ' dumb celebrity' model, but has filtered down to more regular people. The trouble is that when you attach glamour to anything it becomes more valuable. And some of those people really will believe that they will get a better tattoo. When they have they realise they don't.

I remember thinking it was a little sketchy that the shop was charging such exorbitant prices without any sort of education about how fine line micro tattoos would age. To your point, it’s fine if you’re aware of how it’ll last and are ok with it, but the young people that followed the celebrities to Bang Bang didn’t realize it, and I would have liked to see more care from the shop. I did want to get tattooed by one of the other artists at the shop who does really incredible florals, but prices START at $4k for a piece (not a sleeve) and I just… can’t. Even though I really don’t mind paying for good tattoos and could probably get $4k together and would never regret the piece, I just really get the sense that the shop is overcharging (so my artist has to overcharge) and I had to come to grips that it’s out of my budget at this time. For $4k I could fly to several other countries and get multiple tattoos! I secretly hope this artist leaves Bang Bang and at a different shop so I can try again though

Successful people are ambitious, especially if they grew up poor and always hungry. Not everyone can afford to put other people's feelings over their own. Tattooing is a business and if Keith can charge those prices and get them, then I say that's good for him. Let the guy fly for as long as the wind will carry him, nothing lasts forever.

I kinda get that he has NDAs since he became very famous from the internet and his business heavily relies on how he's percived on the internet, but it still is quite weird

To be honest, I probably would have ventured into a shop like this based on aesthetics when I was wanting my first tattoo 20 years ago as I feel it would have been less intimidating. Now I don’t feel that way and really love to look through their art work.

Magic Ink is impossible to laser. And i didn’t find any mentions of it on their homepage. That’s dangerous and irresponsible - saying it’s the safest thing ever but are the plastic particles going to melt when lasered?

His personality is one thing, but his business choice of making a high end shop, charging crazy prices doesn’t feel slimey to me. He’s just filling a spot on the market, the same way Romeo Lacoste was the “KZitem” tattoo guy even though his work was pretty standard. If he’s an abusive person then it negates all the rest, but the business practices isn’t inherently negative.

💥 I would only get tattooed by bang bang if I suddenly had a lot more money than sense. I'm also kind of tempted to buy this "magic ink" and just figure out what's in it, wouldn't be that hard.

I will say the only time I would pay 100k is for the uzivert tattoo. Where he went under sedation and got his whole torso tattooed in 2 days. He payed 200k I think but a sleeve for 100k is crazy😂😂😂

I'm not excusing all the other bullshit, but I can understand the NDA's if its specifically to cater to celebrities. Imagine if an employee took security footage of a celebrity getting tattooed where they were partially or completely nude for the tattoo? Or just employees spreading gossip about the celebrities that were tattooed there. That would be a big selling point for me if I were a celebrity.
