The AVX was my first Equatorial mount when coming back to the hobby in 2016. I now also have the AZ-EQ6 Pro and a HEQ5 pro with the Rowan Belt mod. The latter is smoother and more accurate when tracking than the AVX albeit at a slightly higher cost. I mainly use the AVX now for Solar observation with a Coronado Solarmax III 70 mm and it does a fine job. Tracking accuracy is not critical in this application. Interestingly after months of sitting in the hot Australian Sun all day the axes are now incredibly smooth. I think the stiff grease has mostly melted away leaving a thin film only. The RA axis is super smooth and easy to balance now. After upgrading to the Skywatcher mounts and long out of warranty on the AVX I had nothing to lose so opened it up to adjus the gear mesh myself, the driving gears and the Worm to Main gear are now as close to perfect as I can get without binding. Value for money, Yes I think I got that. Six years of fun with the mount and it is still going strong and actually running much better than when new.

Thank you for starting this channel. I’ve only owned an AVX and after a year or so I’m just getting the hang of imaging (loving the ASIAIR Plus!!!!). If you have any more feedback on the AVX or on imaging in cold weather, I’d love to hear your thoughts (expecting a NorEaster this weekend here in North Jersey). Considering your down to earth presentation, I’d also love to have you consider making a Pixinsight video. Most videos assume most viewers are ‘user friendly’ Pixinsight users….man, would I love a “slow,” step-by-step tutorial. Anyway, best of luck with your channel. I shall look forward to more. Joe

Thanks joe. Plenty of more Content coming. I have some really easy pixinsight videos on the channel already and a many more coming. It’s a hard subject to teach but I’m trying to make it a little less dry then the usual presentations. And yeah I noticed my avx started to get a little out of whack as the temp kept getting lower and lower.

I ran an AVX for a couple of years before getting an EQ6. Your results are consistent with what I was seeing. I still have mine.. these days its mostly for visual but it's okay at shorter focal lengths. Nice image, CS!

Thanks man. I’m fairly happy for what I got. The best part is it should keep running that way for a long time. The eq6r got bad really fast. It’s not like it has been used every day the past year. Thanks for stopping by!

@@easyastroimages5818 Hope you get the eq6 sorted out. My first one had issues.. random severe RA spikes. Sent it in to SW, they "serviced" it. Came back and was worse.. after that they replaced it. I have two of them now and so far both are running well.

AVX arent bad mounts by any means you have to stay on top of the firmware updates often. I ran a C8 with a hyperstar on 1 for a year with .10 rms .5 px error. If you can get your polar alignment nailed. within a 1-3 arcseconds. Any mount will guide beautifully. The payload limits are your only difference. I upgraded to a Losmandy G811GHD , They're still about the same price they were new pre 2020. You can reliably guide to the max payload on them. There UI interface you will fell more comfortable with as it is similar to EQmod. They are a very high quality mount. I have been running one for 2 years now. You can even tune them yourself if the need ever arises 'spring loaded worm" Even their G8 mount is worth the price. Gear is hard to come by these days...

Great video. I find that I don't need to use cpwi to connect to my AVX (bought 8/2019) using Phd2 and NINA. I have a RASA 8 on mine and usually get guiding around or under 1.0. Have you seen Astro Farmer's video Mastering the AVX? I found it very helpful.

That sounds good mate. I am going to look for it right now. I can use the regular celestron driver to connect but so many said it’s unstable without using cpwi

I’m revisiting your video again (perhaps the third time). I keep getting more and more out of this one each time I view it. If you don’t mind a couple of questions. I have the same setup as you (AVX, Celestron 8”, ASIAIR Plus). I’m never done a PEC training with my AVX and to be honest I can’t figure out how to do it. Is PEC necessary with the AIR? If so, any direction you can give me (or tutorials you can refer) on how to do PEC training would be fantastic! Is it done through CPWI? How difficult is this process (obviously, I’m a bit challenged with this). I’d be willing to purchase a step-by-step tutorial/instruction from you (that would be most appreciated). FYI: waiting to get my AVX back from Orange County Telescope. I had the two upgrades, e.g., the Japanese roller bearings and ceramic upgrade to the worm gears). Yours, Joe

I bought a cgemll with a C8. It was so bad at gipuiding I sent it back and they sent me another one. Learned why it guides so bad in dec. thought I’d have it hypertuned. A 600$ after shipping , bad idea . It balanced awesome but still guided bad. The harmonic distortion from the motors is why. Si Sold it at a big loss and bought a eq6r. Guides way better but still has stiction in both axis’s. I’ll hypertune it myself probably next winter or maybe this fire season here in Northern California. After may the smoke is crazy. But maybe it won’t be so bad this year. So just tuned into to you like your videos. Hey make a video on you putting back together the eq6r.

That all sounds like the usual with this stuff. Not getting what we are paying for. Joes astrophotos and astrobloke channels did amazing videos on how to tear it down and put it back together. And what bearings to buy. I followed their videos without any issue if you want to check them out. I’ll be making a video on the last part of the process of getting the work carriages properly aligned as I feel that’s the part they left out snd it sounds like it is the most frustrating part of the process. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll be keeping it up!

Put it in the hot sun for a few days. This might sound silly but I use my mounts often for solar work and the heat seems to have improved them all. They get very hot in the Australian Summer sun. My AVX is much smoother now than when new.

Are there ways to improve the AVX? You said it was a bit stiff because of the grease, which would make balancing a tad more difficult since it doesn't just swing. Are there ways to improve that and/or loosen it up?

I’ve honestly not needed to. Just using the high frequency guiding method has gave me fantastic results. Some of the Dec internals are also plastic.

I have had an AVX for six years. Mine was stiff when new and remained so for the first few years. Around 2019 I started using it for Solar Observation with a Solar scope. The mount would sit in the hot sun all day. After a few months I noticed the axes were much smoother and not stiff at all. The RA axis is really easy to balance now. I can only guess that the heat has allowed much of the grease to liquify and move away from the tight areas. The mount still slews smoothly and is quieter than ever.

It’s now $1200 and still worth $800 at best, I wish Celestron could actually deliver one that works, have had 2 DOA and I’m thinking once this one is refunded I’ll go with the EQ6… I’d say Celestron is now down to just boxing them without any quality control at all…

@@easyastroimages5818 I wanted to love it, I’m sure the AVX is decent when it works, ended up adding to my budget and getting the EQ6. I think it was a good choice, lot more money, but I doubt I’ll ever outgrow it. I really liked how solid the AVX is for its weight, with some minor improvements and better QC it’s would be a really killer mount for lighter loads… I wasn’t willing to try a third time though… hopefully the EQ6 is working out of the box.

I've had an AVX for years and I say absolutely not worth it. I think anybody that really wants a good EQ mount should be looking for something better. I've got the AM5 now and it's well built, reliable and awesome. I can't even believe that the AVX costs that much these days.
