A depleted Rangers team travelled to Parkhead knowing defeat would close the gap at the top of the table to only two points but a battling performance effectively sealed '9-in-a-row'. With a number of injuries, Mark Hateley was brought back to the club while Andy Dibble made his debut. Brian Laudrup scored the only goal of the game just before half-time and in the second half Hateley and Malky Mackay were sent off. Paulo di Canio was sent off after the final whistle after running away from Ian Ferguson.
