+Anthony Lopez Interesting. I keep listening to songs from Destiny hoping I'll warm up to Eabha, but I haven't been able to like her voice. Not sure why. Interestingly, I have always felt the same way about Orla. They're both competent singers of course, but there's something about both their voices and maybe their style too that I don't care for. None of this bothers me when she's in harmony (the opening a capella harmony here is gorgeous), just when solo. Am I the only one? I've not seen anyone else say that. Regardless, I like this song a lot.

+Bryan Keeler You're not the only one. I only warmed up to Orla's voice AFTER she left Celtic Woman and pursued her solo career. I did not pay much attention to her during her time with the ensemble. LOL Her rendition of "Siúil A Rún" and "Newgrange" were too gloomy and depressing for the younger me to grasp and embrace at the time (Not the these songs are cheerful in nature). Strangely, I liked her voice much better after listening to her solo albums for she probably chose the songs that could effectively polish her voice and make her shine more. Nevertheless, I love Eabha's unique and haunting voice since it brings out the depth for any song.

For all the non Gaelic people Come, come, come, O love, Quickly come to me, softly move; Come to the door, and away we'll flee And safe for aye may my darling be! Nicely done! One small thing - the line is "I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel" - the reference is to tools the woman uses with her spinning wheel, rather than to fishing gear. (She will give up her means of making a livelihood in order to equip her love for his adventures in foreign wars.)

Hearing such beautiful old Irish songs sung with such passion and feeling fills me with such incredible pride in my Irish culture. An ancient culture bourne out of wonderful mythology, brutality, oppression, passion, pride and a fierce struggle and determination to maintain our beautiful language and identity. I could not or would not want to be anything other than irish. The passion and pride I feel for my country as an Irish woman is immeasurable. Thank you for your passion and warmth towards irish culture. It is wonderful that you can also experience it. This old irish song holds a particular significance in Irish history. It is a taditional Irish love song from the perspective of a woman missing her lover, who has joined the Irish Brigade in France. Translating to “Walk( or go), My Love,” Siuil a Run expresses the bittersweet hope that her lover will one day return. Both lovers are willing to give their lives for freedom and love. After the Jacobite Uprisings (1680s-1746) and the Glorious Revolution (1688) within Ireland and Scotland, many Jacobites were exiled to France and sought military careers in the French Army. Led by Lord Mountcashel, the Irish Brigade returned to Ireland to fight for the Jacobite cause in 1688-1691. During the Seven Years War, membership in the Irish Brigade was considered treasonous by the British government. The Treaty of Limerick during the reign of William and Mary promoted the Penal Laws against the Irish Catholic population (many of whom identified with the Jacobite cause), which led to significant oppression and dehumanization of the Irish populace. This song expresses mourning and support of the singer’s lover, yet the sorrow runs deeper within historic context. James Joyce references Siuil A Ruin in Ulysses to parallel his themes of loss of culture and language. The original lyrics are lost, akin to the near loss of the Irish Gaelic language, now enmeshed with English and some nonsensical phonetic phrasing (“Shule Aroon”). Irish intergenerational trauma derives from this loss of language and culture, which culminated in a deliberate genocide of the irish population by the British during the Great Famine. Today the potato famine is often referred to, almost in a mocking and belittling manner, making fun of irish people. But it's impact was a calculated one by the British at that time. It had a devastating effect on irish people and their culture and language. The population of Ireland pre famine was 8.5 million. It still nowhere near that figure 170 years after the famine,.
