Tatum's defensive instincts are almost unmatched in the league. Dude is almost never out of position and can essentially shut down the weak side all on his own a lot of the time. You can tell he had a ton of good coaches instilling all the mechanics and fundamentals in him. Spending his first 5+ years in the league studying Marcus Smart probably helped a lot as well. It's something that's massively overlooked by most people and honestly it's because the dude does his job so well that the opposing offense will usually just want to keep the ball on the other side of the floor from wherever he is, but even then he's always covering like 3+ lanes in help simultaneously. Legit one of the elite off-ball defenders in the game right now. Even in transition you can see him like calculating the lanes as they change on the fly and adjusting his position so he's able to use his length to actually react to all options rather than having to predictively gamble on one.

Don't forget Horford as a teammate and defensive mentor as well. Total professional, detail oriented and also capable of switching onto virtually anybody. Tatum's defense and rebounding is so underrated, and the reason I would NEVER get rid of him no matter how frustrating he can be trying to cosplay Kobe on the offensive side at times. With KP, this is the best defensive starting 5 I can remember in my lifetime since the Bulls and Pistons of the late 80's and through the 90's. Elite across the board...

As a Celtics fan I appreciate this. Most Celtics fans don’t even get this. In terms of help and weak side defense, he’s one of the best wings in the league and Smart had a huge impact on that. I’d love to see him get the defensive appreciation SGA gets but I know damn well he won’t.

He doesn’t get talked about on defense because he doesn’t gamble for steals all the time and talk shit like Pat Bev. Plus he would be even better on defense if he was just a role player who sat in the corner on offense. He should’ve had all defensive selections in 2020 and 2022

Pritchard was the X factor in the series in many ways, even while his offense was missing. Mazulla clearly decided letting Bam get his but shutting down Herro was the key, especially when backups were in. Great breakdown! As a Celtic watcher, I just wanted to say Sam Hauser is actually a pretty good defender. A lot of the league is unaware of this, and assume (usually) that he's bad because he's a white guy who's a 3 point specialist, but he's actually done very well over the past 2 years of staying in front of guys, and often teams try to pick on him and realize after about 2-3 possessions they can't really pick on him.

What's crazy is people are like "What's wrong with Tatum? He only scored 16 points? When's he going to wake up?". Just goes to show you how ridiculously skewed people's opinions are towards offense. Tatum is playing elite defense with a triple-double and multiple double-doubles in this series. But, if he doesn't score 30 because he stepped back and let the Derek White inferno rage, people lose their minds. smh
@NousagiBrat

He only scored 16 because Brown was cooking so he was the primary option tonight. Plus the Heat are loading up on Tatum. Then the second half was basically just cruise control and he never had to shoot anymore. But yeah, casuals wont see that.

I’ve been saying this man. Tatum learned from a young age how to make the players around him better. Credit to Derrick White for putting up 38 with no free throws but Tatum helped facilitate a lot of that. Theres no selfish play on this team starting with its leader and that’s why they’re so efficient.

It should read "Bam Adebayo is known for setting some of the best blatantly illegal moving screens in the league". Even the example you used in the video he was sliding to his right and gave a hip check to Tatum with the official close enough to touch him. He does this every time and I don't know why he is allowed to do it.
