Tyler they don't pay tax and control the politicians so hoping they will act decently is a long shot. They exist to make money and part of that is keeping the current politics intact

I personally haven’t been censured but I’m sure it’s coming. You’re spot on man.

thanks :) but i wouldnt be too sure you havent been censored....maybe not censored insomuch as had the algorithm weighted against topics you speak on. you guys are generally pretty neutral off-grid topics but we do get mothballed as a loose community compared to, say, makeup tutorials or left wing media channels which get constant recommendation

Hey Tyler, good topic. Sorry I am a few days late, catching up on my youtubers now. I think at a certain “size” point, it becomes an ethics issue to censor. Town square, as you say. For now, the law seems to side with the “private entity” argument

hey you're just fine, obviously i'm much further behind in answering my comments. i agree that it probably has to do with size, my feeling is that when they apply for protection from liability, they should also be held under specific requirements to be fair on to not censor anything but illegal speech

You make an excellent point. Does it make sense for them to have it both ways? The technology is in its infancy, and its full effects on our society have yet to be fully understood. Just for the sake of discussion, what if these "digital town square" platforms were nationalized? I know from a more libertarian perspective, nationalization is taboo; again, this is just for the sake of argument. But if they were literal public institutions, not private companies providing service to the public, they could then truly be "digital town squares" and ostensibly free from censorship. But you're right, since they aren't, it's awkward to try to justify that they can't control who says what on their service while also controlling who says what on their service.

the nationalization is an interesting concept, im not really sure if it can be properly achieved; how much of the appeal of twitter or youtube would disappear with a .gov suffix? or how soon would the next new thing emerge in the private market? i get what the point is: it would then be subject to federal requirements protecting free speech, but there could be alot of other issues stemming from it, and it seems that we could simply enforce the free speech protection as being a requirement of receiving federal liability protection which they already receive. all legal speech is allowed; if they censor, they are retroactively held liable for all criminal speech ever posted to their platform. all calls for violence, all doxxing, etc. we already would hold them liable BUT for their argument that they dont have the ability to control speech (at scale)
