This recording took place in 1991 at the Centenary Celebrations for the Aboriginal town of Mapoon in Far North Queensland.
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this recording may feature the voices of people now deceased.
Mapoon is a beautiful small, coastal town in tropical Far North Queensland location on the Western Cape of Cape York Peninsula. The town has had a long and colourful history from it's traditional times to being a Missionary town (see old photograph of the Mission house and church in the slide-show). In 1963 (post-Mission days) the townspeople were forcibly removed from their homes by the then Queensland Government in an attempt to clear the locals off the land in order to mine for bauxite- a venture which was never successful. The houses were burnt to the ground while residents were loaded onto boats and sent to places such as Thursday Island in the Torres Strait Islands and "New" Mapoon further north of the Peninsula. This dark moment in history was said to have been the inspiration for the song Beds Are Burning by Australia band Midnight Oil.
Many of the Mapoon people have since returned home and the town is looking better and better with a promising future ahead of it! The Centenary Celebrations in 1991 and the Paanja Festival (the 50 year commemoration of the Burning of Mapoon) are two major events which has symbolised the strength, survival and unity of the Mapoon people. (PS sorry about the watermark on the images, I used a trial version of a movie editing program).
NOTE: I do not know the original recorder of this recording but I thank them and only intend for it, now being on KZitem, to provide only for the entertainment and education of the public, to preserve the culture and heritage of Mapoon and to pay respect to my countrymen and women.
