Originally opened as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum in 1842 in Milledgeville, Georgia, the facility still continues to be open today approaching 200 years later. And having been constructed over 20 years before the Civil War, and because it was built and initially staffed by African-American slaves, and, as a result, portions of the Central State Hospital's history are dramatically different from most other asylums built in the 1800s.
