The permanent magnets in magnetos lose their strength with standing unused. They can be remagnetized if you have the right machine! Also points get a thin film of corrosion on them, again with standing, an emory nail board is the ideal tool to give them a quick clean. Nick some of your good lady! Really enjoyable and successful video, you cant beat a good clear out and tidy up! Phil

I’m a bit confused with the terminology used…I thought the magnetos (EU terminology) were what we call the ignition coils (North American terminology), but then after Ex magneto was removed from the engine, it looked like it was actually the distributor. Does this engine combine the ignition coil and the distributor or are we talking about two different things?
@philhermetic
3 ай бұрын
@@Tesseraethese magnetos are a distributer and a high voltage spark generator combined. Instead of a distributor with points and a seperate high voltage spark coil fed from a battery, the high voltage coil is driven by a rotatong magnet, with internal points and distributor all in one unit, thus you can run the vehicle with flat batteries by tow starting it and then charging the batteries with the engine driven alternator .

Then when she stuttered, I thought carb problem, didn't know about fuel pressure things. So quite pleased with myself. Even more impressed with you, Joe. How you got to know about these things, I'd love to know. I'm sure a lot of others would too. You are as has been said before, a very good instructor. You obviously know your stuff and demonstrate it well. From someone who is of your grand dads age, that pleases me no end. only a small tip, just for a minute, might want to use a dielectric grease on the electrical connections, doesnt melt, keep moisture out and corrosion. stuff like Kent K44 would work a treat :) Use it on high voltage modern ignition systems to prevent arc tracking down the sides of spark plugs etc.

Hey guys. As far as batteries go. Get in a couple of good quality chipped trickle chargers. As long as a battery is held at or near full charge,they last for years and almost never give trouble. Leaving batteries just sit without such treatment is just asking for problems. The chips that do ramping delivery of amps completely changed battery care.

I've acquired mint MOD new old stock Scintilla magnetos in the past that have never been out of their tropically packaged boxes since the 1960's and every one was dead. They all needed new coils and remagnetising. They will fade with time regardless of use and do exactly what yours is doing now. For the plug to cap needle pierce connections the problems faced are actually two problems, which is being poorly addressed with copper anti-seize, which is a bit strange in its application to this particular problem because we do not know how the compound will react with plastics over time. The first problem is a good connection and the second, sealing the connection against water intrusion. The first task is cleaning the contacts, instead of sand paper you could use a rotary Dremel tool with the appropriate small abrasion/polishing wheel. Then once clean apply a contact anti-oxidant like Deoxit D100L in the little brush bottle. Cut back the wire to make a fresh connection. Then to keep moisture out you would use a product like Grote Ultra-Seal around the wire and fill in any cavities where water could get in after it is connected, essentially sealing around the wire connection from the outside to keep moisture away from the contact, which will help prevent corrosion. The Grote stays put rather well and you can shape it into the space to keep water out.
