As a group of remote Indigenous Australians we found that our current ‘Western’ model of education
has historically been unsuccessful in the community in which we live. We hoped that Centurion
University would provide us with some ideas for alternative methods of education and training to meet
the needs of our youth and bring about a brighter future.
Our visit to Centurion University was all that we hoped for and more. We saw tribal people, similar to
us, engaged in valuable action-based learning that led to real skills and genuine employment +
entrepreneurship opportunities.
Our experience at both Bhubaneswar and Paralakhemundi has encouraged us to explore opportunities
of a future partnership with Centurion University and engage in more skills-based learning opportunities
both within and outside our community.
With the exposure and experience at Centurion University and the direct involvement of Prof Mukti
Mishra as the mentor partner in Wadeye, we now have hope for a future where our children and youth
can break the cycle of generational welfare dependency.
The visit has resurrected the latent energy to think ‘positive, productive and progressive’.
