For anyone trying to get an actual education, please don't waste your time like I did going to an university in any western countries... and go to an eastern country's university. Apparently they still value knowledge and proper education. For example, look at any Russian university's CS, Math and Physics curriculums or whatever curriculum for whatever degree you want to study, and then compare that with your country's universities. Don't tell me the difference isn't staggering. It is absurd that what we have in the west is still considered an "education". It is an insult to those who came before us and actually went to institutions that still cared about teaching real information.

My ex-wife was placed in her position in the IT department of a Law Firm by the Senior Partner because of her skills during a massive technology shift. She had the skills to helps the company make this move successfully. She remained there for almost 20 years. The firm later got a new HR director who looked at her resume and said she had no degree and had to be fired. She objected and explained the senior partner had placed her there well knowing what her degree status was. He had retired but still owned the major share of the company. He backed her against the HR newbie. The HR department lost in a way. During a later company restructuring her spot had been classified as needing a degree. But with the biggest stock holder in the company backing her she couldn't be fired. The deal she got was she had been with the company for over 20 years. She was asked to retire with a 2 year salary bonus. 2 year medical coverage and substantial retirement bonus for longevity. She took it as she was pretty well done with the company anyway and moved into a plumb job at another firm, all with better benefits.

I graduated in RF/Microwave systems and I am now an RF Characterization Engineer and in my field university and degrees are useful. You can learn the basics on internet, but when you work with hardware internet is far from being enough. I think we should have a more accurate speech about this topic and not just turn this into a binary problem. We shouldn't just say that degrees are useless, it depends of what you want to do. Great video 👌 I personally believe one has to make this choice on their own based on whether they think the university experience will be of value to them or not and will it help them advance in the career they're interested in, most professions in today's day & age don't require a four year degree but a few do and these are the ones which require people to put in even more time than the regular four year courses (Master's and then PhD/Superspeciality). So it's up to the individual to decide and highly dependent on the career path they're interested in pursuing. Gaining education/knowledge is extremely important, now whether that's done through self education or institutionalised education, that's up to the individual. By the time people reach college they're mature enough to make such decisions on their own, so rather than completely focussing on the college issue, we should focus more on the K-12 education system as to how it can be improved, the education be made more conceptual & intellectual and how the spark of creativity that kids naturally have not be doused by the teaching methods of the archaic education system that we currently have. If the foundation is strong then anything of value can be built on it and in more ways than one. Gee, this comment became way too long 😬😂

This is utter non sense. The example show a few exceptional individuals and not the means of the engineers. The best keep secret in Silicon Valley is that if you want to make money take employment with one of the large corporation (Google, Apple, Facebook etc.) and stay there at least 20 years. There is no way any startup will match the stock appreciation you can get by saving your shares from employment. It is less glamorous but it works better. It also misses the point of education. Give you a broad knowledge, I am aghast of the approach of education as utilitarian i.e. you get educated to get a job, I am not denying there is some value there but there is a much larger value in general knowledge that enables you to understand a very varied domain knowledge and think out of the box. As for the cost of education, it should be free, It is free in a lot of countries (France, Germany etc.) and guess what that is were you have the most meritocracy. Society is flexible and social class break apart. Education cost is aa way to prevent social mobility. Look at Elon Musk example he built a super school for his child and then quickly closed it down so that no one else can benefit…

Almost everything is available online for free or nearly free. No one needs professors or universities… except for lab training. We should be gathering together on our own at the park (or wherever) to learn with each other. Great minds have already put all we need to know in books, ya know. These massively expensive institutions are good for one thing: PROVING that you learned something (a biology degree from MIT is indeed a strong indication to an employee that you’re knowledgeable about biology). But lab training is an issue… During your self study you’d occasionally need access to expensive lab equipment in order to test your hypotheses, but lab skills is something that undergraduates shouldn’t even be thinking about anyways. You should be able to go to a 20 minute interview with the department chair to get access to lab equipment. Twenty minutes really should be enough for a professor to know whether or not you know your stuff well enough to start lab training. Aside from lab skills training (especially dangerous lab skills) universities are truly useless.

University is relevant to those who meet the academic prowess required, Universities should not be peddling to the lowest potential but to the higher standard. Dropping entrance requirements to fields including education, law and medicine cheapens the quality of the qualification. A number of graduates who perform well at University fail to succeed in a career. Some, who are mediocre at academics do sustain themselves in established careers. Furthermore, careers in accounting and law should be accessible through completion of Articles and sitting the bar examinations. Universities, establish a barrier to entry only accessible to those whom can afford the fees. This means that Universities groom a culture, cultivate a certain type of lawyer or accountant(economist or analyst). With the demise of the Articled programs, loyalty to the firm is no longer a cocern, job hopping becomes the norm. Fewer individuals with a calling to serve in a just career are sidelined, thus access to legal or accounting advice is restricted to only those privileged enough to afford the services of these graduates.

"Every kid before finishing high school should learn to code". Can you explain why is that? This man conveys wrong message. He probably does not know much about people and that everyone has different intelligence among MULTIPLE intelligences

They say we don't need a degree , of course , that is true , we just need to have the skills of subjects that we are studying like engineering or medicine. Some of us must go to college and university because we still need more engineers , chemists , pharmasist , computer-scientists and lawyers. But the way of teaching should be more developed and useless things should be excluded.

Stupid college route? Yeah tell that to Elon Musk that had a double degree in physics and economics from UPenn, Peter Thiel that has a masters degree from Stanford, etc. majority of CEOs have a degree. Try applying for jobs at any fortune 500 companies without a degree...

I learned coding in college in the 70s, but I was an embedded systems guy. I'm wracking my brain, but I'm having trouble finding a reason that my step-daughter, who's in law school, should learn coding. Anybody have an idea?

smart contracts is my first guess. If someone is able to communicate with IT on a technical level, but also has a profound knowledge of law that would be a very very useful skillset 👌

@rdyer8764

@@RobertMJohnson Yes, I agree, different but related questions. I used the word "should" only because Tim Cook (according to the video) used that word. I still think his is a myopic exaggeration, and I stand by my original question. My step-son, who's studying architecture, uses CAD programs every day. I do see a use for him to understand them at a more technical level, especially if he's writing things akin to macros, and to understand at a deeper level, the strengths and limitations of the particular programs he's choosing/using. Back to my step-daughter... As @Trayce Lost alluded, were she to be going into patent or IP law, I totally agree. However, her technical strengths pretty much stop at posting Instagram selfies and her word processor. Her interest in gadgets mostly involves the features of her iPhone. (And she's marvelous at that!!) At this time, well into her 2nd year, she's about as far away from coding as I am at preparing, or even understanding, a legal brief. As a lawyer I think she'll be totally fine without learning any coding.

Was this entire video designed to lead to a Skill Share advert? Would be a mighty coincidence if not. Elon Musk can only comment on what higher education meant to him. The guy has a massive IQ and so of course he is going to find most of his work to be nothing but a mere chore. It won't be good for society overall if the Universities die (which is why it is scary that they are indeed dying). As a faithful capitalist I think we should be careful of what we allow the free market to disrupt. And besides, per Elon's logic, without the managed environment of school, where else are you going to learn to do you chores? I like Elon but he does have the ego of a man of his intelligence so some things he says should be taken with a pinch of salt. For anyone who disagrees with me I say, enjoy your vocational training!

You actually missed the point. What people like Elon Musk want to say that a piece of paper doesn't make you automatically good and not everyone can become a scientist. Our society ,for now atleast, needs both skilled workers and scientists. Do you need a university degree if you want to become a programmer , a carpenter , a farmer , an accountant , a public worker , etc. The answer is no. Jobs that only really need is a certain set of skills shouldn't require from you a university degree. The last two decades people have been focusing so much on university degrees that they have missed the point of them existing. A good alternative for the jobs that I listed above would be a platform that allows you to showcase your ability in a certain field while also acquiring experience. This platform/project can be co-funded from the government and local companies ( said companies can also benefit from a lower cost workforce than can be cycled constantly).

Learning coding is in relevant without math just pointing this out coding is not just learning a new language For example if you were going to work for NASA you better learn mathematics that goes with all engineering job.

anybody today can learn almost anything without college these days. however, a degree is a certification a document, a guarantee that you have actually learned the required skills and you were tested to prove you learned those skills. how do you prove to a company that you know math, engineering or medicine without a degree? for the many who claim a college degree is worthless, ask yourself, would you go to a doctor to perform a life-saving surgery knowing that the doctor didn't go to medical school? or imagine a skyscraper was designed by non-engineers. Elon Musk has multiple college degrees.
