Great to see that practical skills are still important at school in the US.

For now. I do feel that my kids value what we do at my school. The real struggle honestly is the US’s perception of all teachers. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to teach in a place where teachers were regarded as highly as doctors.

I am so happy I found this video and your channel! My high school was very fortunate and had a fantastic ceramics room like yours. That’s where I discovered my love for clay and basically lived in the room during my entire high school career. It makes me so happy to see other high schools with huge ceramics rooms like this. It’s so important for kids to work with their hands and engage with raw materials and mediums. Can’t wait for more!! 😁

For sinks, we have retrofitted dealies. We adapted to the drain plug with a 2.5in pipe, that comes up to about an inch from the top of the sink. Then we capped it, with a hole in the very center. Cleaning is a bit of a mess, but it works.

That's such an amazing work space, Jim. I'm teaching pottery at a City Recreational Program and my work area is the size of your clay storage room. We manage to fit a slab roller, a mid-size kiln, 12 glaze buckets, 5 wheels, a large table with 12 stools around it. The sink is in a different room and we have pretty much no storage. It'l very cozy to be in the space. It'd be so amazing if I ever get to work in the space you are in. Your kids are super lucky to have such an amazing facility in a school.

I think your students are very blessed to have such an awesome studio. Can't really understand the school not installing traps, it saves their plumbing. The cost of traps is a lot lower than the cost of plumbing. Studio looks super clean compared to some that I've seen, great job keeping it organized. Thanks for the video, and you look cute in your glasses, real "academic".

Kinda reminds me of my old HS studio my teacher had a MFA in ceramics and build one heck of a program via art club fundraisers. We even had a giant walk in glaze booth except she got lucky and got a giant building that had studio side then just regular art and photo side

I teach in a Middle School, It is so wonderful to see how you set up your systems and classroom. for the sinks i just use a (assuming you live down in the USA) 5 Gallon bucket system- 1st bucket rinse off hands before you go to a sink. 2nd bucket is a settling tank for slip pail contents at the end of a session, and the third pail is for tray cleaning (i used to use a Mr. Turtle pool for tray cleaning- huge headache like the pink stain in cat in the hat the tray that needed cleaning at the end of each week was the Mr. Turtle pool)

I too have contemplated a bucket system prior to sinks. I may give that a go for my wheel throwers this fall. I’m in IL so yes, USA. Lol, Mr. Turtle pool :)

That's a studio space that many a ceramics teacher would envy, including myself. I won't complain about mine, but it's not a fraction of that. Yesz you can use saggers in an electric kiln to contain atmospheric effects to just the pieces in them. It's still a little questionable, as any fumes can still seep out and affect the elements.
@CeramicJim

I am very lucky. I try to tell my students that we have an amazing space. I thought that might affect the elements. I’ve been reading up on doing sawdust firings wrapped in aluminum in an electric kiln but that sounds even worse for fumes wouldn’t you say?
@benpatterson4452

@@CeramicJim Yeah, it is generally advised against doing reduction, of any type, in an electric kiln. You can wrap them in the foil and use those saggers you have instead. If you want some nice reduction/ atmospheric effects, you could always build a Raku kiln (If you don't have one) I've done Raku firings with students numerous times, and it's always fun.

It’s something I asked for when I was first hired. I was pretty much told that is was my job to manage it. Now that I have a few years under my belt I may ask for something like that again. Thanks Assaf!

Hi I'm wondering where the pots are? I mean the examples of completed work or failures that we learn from, and beautiful images to inspire ? It looks very functional and organised ...but where are the ideas, the design, the art, the colour?...like, the reason we all love clay...?

@@CeramicJim hi Jim. I just read that message I sent to you back to myself and thought how rude I sounded. So sorry! Please accept my apologies. You have a great space for students, im green with envy about those bins for glaze materials! It seems you (Im from the uk) have schools and colleges that will invest in ceramics whereas here in the UK they pulled a lot of arts funding I'm afraid. What's the best thing you did to change your studio since you made the video? Sorry again for my abruptness in that comment.

Lol. No worries! I feel like I know what you meant. You’re not wrong. I’m content with white walls and a functional sink so I have to push myself to keep improving the room. I honestly appreciate the push ;)

Did you ever get a chance to try the saggar pots in your electric kiln? I would like to try it in mine but am nervous the sagger smoke will get out and damage my elements.
@CeramicJim
3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t used them yet. If smoke did damage elements I don’t know how you could tell if it damaged it. I did a few foil wrap “pit firings”. Sawdust around each pot wrapped in foil. I don’t know if the foil stopped the smoke or if it damaged the elements but they’re worked since. 🤷♂️ I suppose they could shorten the life.

I am thinking about opening a pottery school , but really don’t know how or where to start, did anyone have an idea of how much a pottery class of 100 students will cost to set up, with all the equipment, materials , tools, everything a pottery studio needs, I just need an approximate quote.. I am working on a non profit museum project and will love to have a pottery class ...any help will be appreciated...thank you
@CeramicJim
5 жыл бұрын
That’s tricky. There are “levels” of what you could consider a pottery studio. Basic to more advanced. If you are starting one the big expenses are lions and pottery wheels. 100 students is a lot! Hopefully they’re not all at the same time. Some schools rotate students through wheel projects if they have a smaller numbers. As for a raw number it’s impossible for me to do without knowing exact plans, equipment, what clays you’re going to use, what glazes, and also any construction or custodial work to make the space usable would be extra. Ceramics is a big start up cost when you teaching large numbers. I would get a big electric kiln and 10 wheels a slab roller and an extruded. Those are the big basic things and the rest of the tools you can figure out as you go along. Hope this helps!
