@freedomlife5968

By the way Sarah, you do realize that even if these products contain 0.8% retinol, they can actually list retinol as the final ingredient, even after the preservative, right? That's because once you get to ingredients that have a concentration of less than 1%, you are no longer obliged to list the ingredients in descending order according to the FDA's regulations. They do that to make it more difficult for other companies to copy your formula. So just because fragrance is listed as the final ingredient, don't always assume that it is the least concentrated cause that's not always the case. Ever used a product that contains fragrance as the last ingredient and wondered why it smells so strong despite being listed as the final ingredient after the preservative? Yeah well that's cause in reality it might contain 0.9% fragrance rather than the 0.01% that you might think it contains, so once you get to the 1% line, they can jumble things around all they want, just keep that in mind

@@gdamiano3295 they're completely different products. Retin-A versus encapsulated Retinol. I have both products and I use them both. Differin aka Adapalene gel is a high potency product and is much stronger than any over the counter retinol you'll find. It was just released from prescription to OTC for a reason. It's strong and there's a lot of side effects and you nust know what you're doing before just using it. With the Cerave Resurfacing Serum, it's a great product and I love it but it doesnt compare to Differin aka Adapalene gel whatsoever. That's trying to compare two different products where one delivers much more than the other. It's an unfair assessment and both have their individual benefits but I use both so I suggest doing that as opposed to one or the other. I would never use the Cerave over Differin though. That makes zero sense. Theres barely any actual retinol in the Cerave product so the anti aging benefits will mostly come from Differin.

That must be the case. The purple one has a 1% concentration of retinol (as stated by the Cerave Team on Amazon ca). The blue one has a way lower concentration (from 0.01% to 0.25% - couldnt find a concrete answer). But also remember, it's not just the active ingredients, it's also about the inactive ingredients that make a difference. For example, there is alcohol in the purple one, which could also contribute to the dryness.

If you want a US sunscreen, the most reliable would be something from a L'Oreal or Johnson & Johnson brand cause those companies invest a lot in sunscreen research and innovation and they developed special technologies and methods to stabilize avobenzone. I'm guessing Shiseido is another one you can trust I guess. That, or you can look for a US sunscreen manufacturer that actually has a PA rating, like Murad, Supergoop and Elta MD(they don't put it on the label but they do test it internally).

Suzie Boros - Your first sentence is actually not entirely accurate. A recent study Dr. Dray also spoke about showed that asides from pure petrolatum, it doesn’t matter what order you apply your products; they will absorb at the same rate. Apparently, the point of moisturizer-before-retinol is from the idea that un-moisturized/hydrated skin is more prone to irritation, especially since cleansing can be irritating. To the OP, it doesn’t matter. If you have sensitive skin, ensuring that your moisturizer has dried down on your skin before applying the retinol will lessen the risk of irritation, as damp skin is more penetrable. :)

So far no issues with dryness or peeling but sometimes In the morning will have a small white head along crease of my cheek but it’s gone later in the day... weird. Maybe all of the front loaded slip ingredients and my moisturizer? Anyway I’m going to start using it every other night without the moisturizer to see if that makes a difference. When I’m finished I’ll buy the retinol resurfacing at your recommendation. Also, there’s a new retinol product on the market by Shani Darden that I’ve been looking at too. She has a resurfacing and also a retinol. Have you tried them yet? They are pricey. Have a good day and thanks again for your detailed reviews!

Sounds like you are having pretty good luck introducing it into your routine. There's a term called Retinization, and it applies to the period of adding a Retinol into your routine. Breakouts are a common symptom, and most likely it will stop once your skin fully adjusts to using Retinol. I'm currently testing the Shani Darden Retinol and I really like it but it is very strong. I probably wouldn't start it until you've been able to use Retinol for at least a few months.

@@NOBSBeauty Glad to see your thoughts on Shani's. I've used plenty of over the counter retinols for years and moved up to Shani's as I wanted a higher dose and at the time couldnt find any info on the approximate % the blue cerave had (thank you for that). Shani's wasnt too strong for me, but as I had guessed before trying, it really doesnt justify the overly high pricetag remotely, as much as I liked the packaging and strength. Having oily and blemish prone skin this was way too heavy for me annoyingly. It never full absorbed and almost left a film on my skin no matter how little I used making it unbearable to use my favorite night moisturizer over it. What was comedy is while feeling heavy and using every other night I still had some dry patches only noticeable up close to me. Overall just wish it had been more of a light water gel type consistancy compared to the cream lotolion it was and much better available for the price. Sarah if I could get your opinion on deciding between 2 other retinols I want to try. Initially after Shani's I planned to get the Paula's Choice Retinol Booster per the light serum consistency videos show similar to Inky and Ceraves blue retinols. I almost wish I was a retinol beginner per that lol. I was about to get the PC one and then 2 impressive "retinal" formulas came onto my radar. One being the Maelove thats annoyingly been out of stock since launch/selling out I know you are waiting on also and another almost seeming like a very impressive dupe for it just more expensive and for .5 oz bottle aka the Mychelle Retinal. What is appealing about these over the PC Booster and regular retinol is they claim to be just as potent if not more but without the fear of all the sensitivity, purging, and dryness etc. Thanks so much for your thoughts and your no bs chanel as always for fellow skincare lovers! 🤗💖🖤💖🖤

Whole chin and sides of nose became dry and irritated in less that a week. Not much brightness in the skin and my pores, although not as large as they were pre-retinol, are a bit more visible. I'm 3 weeks in and, while I healed the irritation (still a bit dry), the results are still disappointing. I'm planning on finishing out the rest of it and may go back to the Resurfacing or maybe try a low percentage retinol from The Ordinary. I ran across this video because I had been searching for vs/review videos on these 2 products since experiencing irritation with the Resurfacing retinol and on the Renewing. Thanks for your feedback!

I did so much research before ordering a retinol serum. I chose the CeraVe Retinol Resurfacing one based off reviews and research and watching videos such as this one here. I used to have no skin routine so in the couple of months before introducing a retinol I made sure I was cleansing and moisturising morning and night and applying sunscreen in the day. Once my Cerave arrived, I've found I've been able to use it almost nightly so far (a couple of weeks) with no purging or irritation. The very first night I applied it my skin felt so hydrated and smooth. I loved it. 3 days into using it nightly and I noticed no matter how bad a night I'd had or how tired I felt, I had flowing skin upon waking. I've got melasma, rosacea, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles. So far my pores and wrinkles haven't changed but my skin looks so much smoother! The redness is so reduced and the hyperpigmentation appears to be less obvious. Who knows what the results will be with prolonged use. I also can suffer with acne and pimples but this has not increased any outbreaks. I was thinking of getting the Olay Retinol24 Night Serum after this one since the CeraVe is only stocked in a boutique online store over here and the price is higher as a result, but its working so well I don't know if I should move on from it!

Lol 0.5% retinol in a L'Oreal product? you must be kidding yourself if you think L'Oreal would pour that much retinol in their products. Big manufacturers like L'Oreal & Estee Lauder almost never use a retinol percentage higher than 0.3%, that's cause they don't want to risk irritating your skin. The only exception to the rule that I am aware of is Skinceuticals, but that's because that's what Skinceuticals is about. Heck not even La Roche Posay uses a concentration higher than 0.3%, in fact, in their retinol serum, they use a 0.3% concentration and it is gradual release so it is encapsulated. They ALWAYS encapsulate the retinol to reduce the risk of irritation and use their own proprietary delivery system that they developed and patented. Unlike smaller brands like Paula's Choice, their products go through a more rigorous sensitivity testing, they really put in the time and effort to ensure that their products are as gentle as possible. Sure, sometimes they contain fragrance, linalool, limonene or alcohol but did you ever ask yourself, how often their products that contain these ingredients actually irritate your skin? Unless you are absolutely sensitive or allergic to these ingredients, it's quite uncommon for a L'Oreal skincare product to irritate your skin, that's not to say that it's impossible or can't happen of course cause that would be silly, and some L'Oreal products have irritated my skin no doubts about that, but it is always a small percentage of their products. Whereas with Paula's Choice, the vast majority of their products tend to irritate my skin despite the fact that they claim that their products are free from toxins, allergens and sensitizing ingredients

So now my routine consists of : A.M : Cerave foaming cleanser Thayers witch hazel toner unscented Neutrogena oil free spf 35 moisturizer P.M : Cerave acne cleanser Thayer witch hazel toner unscented Cerave resurfacing retinol serum.. I dont add a moisturizer after this because after the serum I feel moisturized but I know every skin type needs a moisturizer no matter what so am I screwing my self up here?? Or is just a retinol no moisturizer at night okay? Sorry fo the back story I just thought it might help for a more accurate answer (: thank you!

How long from when you first started using it did it begin to do that? Because that’s kind of what it’s supposed to do. It’s most likely an acne purge which is common when using retinol.

Do they sell either of these in Canada? Our laws are so weird for this skincare. I’ve noticed a lot of products that are sold in the states but that are not in Canada.

I'm new to retinol and need help. If I want to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and dark spot which one do you recommend. Thank you.

I think for the issues you state, I would go with CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum. It has some nice skin brightening ingredients included so it will help with fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. Just be sure to start out very slow, use it twice a week for the first several weeks and slowly work your way up to using it every other night, and if your skin handles it well you can work up to nightly use. Also be sure to follow it with a good moisturizer and sunscreen during the daytime to prevent the dark spots from coming back again!

I’ve been using the purple one and now I wish I would have bought the blue one. Do you think either of these are ok to take up under your eyes and my other question is do you think using differin is better than using either of the cerave? I bought the differin and it dried me pretty bad so I’m alternating between the two of them.
@NOBSBeauty

The Purple one is still a great product, so I would definitely finish it. I'm able to use it on the eye area, but be very careful because on sensitive eye areas it can cause dryness. I love Differin, I'm surprised that I didn't have any issues when I started it. If I had to choose between retinols and Differin, I'd choose the Differin. I've found differin does such a great job with pore size, preventing breakouts, and anti-aging. In the long run I think having any type of Retinoid in your skincare routine will help with anti-aging. If Differin leaves your skin too dry then I'd probably finish your bottle of CeraVe and try Differin again after that. If it still leaves your skin feeling too dry then I'd probably pick up the other CeraVe product. It is wonderful that we have lots of different Retinoid options. I think it is most important to find which one works best for you without side effects such as dryness.

No BS Beauty ok thanks so much! I’m going to try differin again. For some reason my skin kind of freaked out on me and it was really red and irritated and almost everything burnt to use. The best thing I’ve found so far to calm my skin down and hydrate is just pure vitamin e oil. I recently bought the krave beauty great barrier relief to try out. I have been putting that cerave retinol under my eyes and have been fine. I also wanted to tell you I’ve been trying to use that first aid beauty serum and it burns pretty bad, even now after my skin has calmed down. I’ll probably end up using it on my neck. My neck isn’t sensitive like my face at all

Both are absolutely wonderful, in fact I tend to rotate those into my routine as well. You can't go wrong with either, but if your skin tends to be on the dry side I'd probably go with Drunk Elephant.

Can you review body cream with retinol, ive got my eye on the paulas choice one. Ive also seen one by advanced clinicals but the pricing seems abit too good to be true.
@NOBSBeauty

I've actually tried both. I think i got the advanced clinical from Marshall's if I recall. They are both good options if you are looking for a retinol body cream. I found that i liked using them on the back of my arms and shoulders but it did make certain areas, like my wrists and ankles get really dry. I actually think that trying the advanced clinical one might be a good idea to see if you like a retinol body Cream and if you do then trying the more expensive PC option if it's something you want to stick with. Both are fragrance free and well packaged. The PC one has more of a matte finish while the advanced clinical takes a bit longer to soak in.
