Can visual arts help us better understand how to identify and treat neurological disorders? Dr. Petra Klinge and like-minded physicians seem to think so. Visuals and artistry can be used as a teaching tool for doctors and medical students to understand, what Dr. Klinge calls, the "face of the threat". In this introductory presentation, Dr. Klinge provides an excellent review of several disorders of cerebrospinal fluid including hydrocephalus, syringomyelia, Chiari malformation, tethered cord, and more. She then uses examples of real art created with those conditions in mind to better explain what patients go through and how doctors can think about treating them more effectively.
This presentation was made at the 4th annual CSF Disorders Symposium held at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University. The title of the meeting was "From Canvas to Clinic" and identified the important connections between art and medicine. (2019)
